11 ULFA ultras surrender

NAGAON, Jan 27: The proposed surrender of ULFA militants initiated by the Nagaon district police administration could not materialize as the Home Department of the Assam Government did not give the green signal at the last moment. [S]

Sanjoy suspect in surrender talks

GUWAHATI, Jan 30: One of the main accused in the kidnapping and subsequent "killing" of social worker Sanjoy Ghose in Majuli island of Upper Assam is negotiating with the police for his surrender. The surrender, the details of which are likely to be finalised in the next "two or three days", is expected to set at rest speculation about Ghose's "death" which has so far been shrouded in mystery because of "contradictory" statements issued by the United Liberation Front of Asom.

According to sources, Bhaskar Baruah alias Mridul Hazarika, son of the late Khageswar Baruah of Ratanpur village in Majuli, met a senior police official in the city on January 27 to negotiate terms for his surrender. [TT]

GUWAHATI, Feb 6: Two hard-core United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants today surrendered to the Army in lower Assam. According to a PIB release, the self-styled "organizing secretaries" of the "Saraighat Anchalik Parishad" of the ULFA, Khairul Hussain alias Phukan Ali and "medical in-charge" of the "seventh ULFA battalion," stationed in neighbouring Bhutan, Tajuddin Ahmed alias Ram Goswami today surrendered to the Army. Hard-core ULFA cadre to surrender

JORHAT, Feb 13: The organizational secretary of the Pub Mandal Santha of the United Liberation From of Assam (ULFA), Naren Saikia alias Moni Hazarika will lay down arms soon. According to a source, the ULFA leader, who had joined the outfit in 1985, communized with the police for his surrender. More ULFA leaders are expected to surrender within the next few days. [S]

IMPHAL, Feb 14: The father and elder brother of one KYKL (O) armed insurgent, who had surrendered to police last Friday, were abducted and shot dead, at Ningthoukhong in Bishenpur district. There is as yet no claim for these killings. [S]

SIVASAGAR, Feb 18: Rupa Barua alias Bimala Barua, wife of senior ULFA leader Chitra Dihingia, has surrendered before the district administration here today. Rupa Barua, who joined the outfit in 1991 and married to Chitra Dihingia in 1997, is the mother of a baby. She escaped from the outfit's main camp at Bhutan and came through to Sivasagar. She hails from Sootea in the district of Sonitpur. [S]

AGARTALA, Feb 26: NLFT militant gunned down one of their former leaders, Tarun Debbarma (35) and his mother-in-law Ms Krishnapati Debbarma (65) at his in-laws house at Sarat Chandra Para, 14 Km from Teliamura Police Station in West Tripura district. Tarun Debbarma was a sector in-charge of the NLFT who deserted the group last year and surrendered. [S]

15 ULFA militants surrender in Nagaon

NAGAON, March 3: Fifteen ULFA militants led by Deepak Bora, commander of the Luitpara unit under Kalong Kapili Anchalik Parishad of the outfit, laid down their arms at the premises of the Namghar at Auniati Satra under Dhing police station today in the presence of a large number of people and pledged to return to the mainstream shunning all sorts of violent activities. AGARTALA, March 9: Two persons were killed and six injured while three NLFT extremists surrendered in Tripura on Wednesday. [AT]

GUWAHATI, April 1: A group of 43 ultras belonging to ULFA and NDFB including a female cadre surrendered in presence of the Deputy Commissioner of Bongaigaon, KC Chamaria at his office. The ultras deposited three .303 rifles, one carbine, ten stenguns, five M20 pistols, one .38 revolver, one .22 revolver, one AK 47 rifle, four rifles and 101 rounds ammunition of various types. [AT]

Surrender package in Meghalaya finds no takers

SHILLONG, April 1: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Sri EK Mawlong today disclosed that not a single militant in the state has so far surrendered under the scheme for surrender-cum-rehabilitation announced by the state government in September last year. [AT]

532 ultras surrender at Ranghar

SIVASAGAR, April 4: In the largest ever surrender of militants in the State, a total 532 cadres of three different outfits, ULFA, NDFB and Karbi National Volunteers (KNV), laid down arms before the Governor Lt Gen (retd) SK Sinha on the forecourts of the historic Ranghar here today.
Of those who laid down arms today, 436 belong to the ULFA, 19 to the NDFB and 77 to the KNV. The Army claimed that there were 200 members from the ULFA's armed wing. However, there was not a central committee member of the ULFA among them.
The militants deposited a large number of arms including four AK-47 rifles, one AK-56 rifle, three carbines, 22 country-made pistols, six 9 mm pistols, 21 point 38 revolvers, one 7.62 mm pistol, two universal machine guns, five 303 rifles, seventeen 12 bore guns, two Chinese-made M-21 pistols, one US-made carbine and 23 numbers of 9 mm revolvers. Repentant MULTA militant gives up violent path

KAMPUR, April 7: 'From a sanguinary mission to this solemn surrender, my sojourn has led me to believe that militancy never begets peace, nor steady economic progress.' This was said by Saiful Islam, son of Idris Ali of Udantala village under Dhing Police Station at the time of his surrender to the Commandant of the 60 Bn. NAGAON, April 12: Bhaity Bora alias Surjyoti Bora, the finance secretary of the 'Madhyamandal' unit of the ULFA, is going to surrender very soon, police sources said, adding that the ULFA leader had already contacted the police in this regard. [S]

JAMUGURIHAT, April 17: Acting on a tip off, the SDPO, Biswanath Chariali, Mr Arnab Deka recovered an India made 9 MM carbine raiding the house of Dhrubajyoti Saikia, 23, in Kadamonigaon on Monday evening. The next day Dhrubajyoti Saikia was arrested as he surrendered at the police station. [S]

26 ULFA militants surrender

GUWAHATI, April 17: Altogether 26 United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants surrendered before the village elders in Darrang district today, an official release said here. The release said that after the surrender ceremony, the village elders approached the Commander of the nearest Army post and the Army assured them that all possible help would be provided to the surrendered ultras. MANGALDOI, April 17: Forty-seven United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants and an National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militant surrendered at Duni village under Sipajhar police station in Darrang district today. Significantly, the surrender ceremony was marked by the complete absence of police, Army and paramilitary personnel and officials of the district administration. The militants surrendered before a few village elders. [S]

JORHAT, April 18: An ULFA activist -- Ranjit Barhoi alias Biju Gohain -- surrendered before the police at Teok here today. The Kachin-trained ULFA militant who hails from Seleng Lakshmibari joined the outfit in 1999. [S]

State Govt in a fix with surrenders

GUWAHATI, April 19: The State Government has found itself in a soup after several hundred militants of various outfits have surrendered their weapons and come overground in the recent past and the process of "returning to the mainstream" still continues at the behest of the Army, the police and the district authorities, because it is unable to rehabilitate them. Even though it is the duty of the State Government to rehabilitate the militants, it is unable to do so because the response from the Centre, despite its promise of help, has been lukewarm. According to official sources, after the AGP-led Government took charge in 1996, nearly 1,600 militants have come overground. However, none of them is a top ULFA or NDFB militant, and majority of them happen to be lower-rung cadres. [S]

NALBARI, April 27: The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has suffered another set-back in Nalbari district, a stronghold of the outfit, following the return of eleven rebels to the mainstream today at a surrender ceremony held at Kalag Doul premises of Barbhag circle. It may be mentioned here that the rebels surrendered before the villagers of the locality. [AT]

MANGALDOI, April 29: Altogether 13 militants -- twelve from the ULFA and one from the NDFB -- surrendered before the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Darrang here today. GUWAHATI, May 2: Altogether 83 militants belonging to different insurgent outfits surrendered in Goalpara and Tinsukia districts today. According to information available here, 75 militants surrendered in Goalpara, while eight surrendered in Tinsukia. [AT]

10 Rabha ultras surrender

GUWAHATI, May 5: A 10-member group of militants belonging to the Rabha National Security Force (RNSF) surrendered at the office of the Superintendent of Police of Kamrup district this morning. SP, BK Mishra informed that the ultras contacted the police authorities earlier expressing their intention to surrender and a country-made revolver along with four hand made bombs and stamp pads and seals were also deposited to the authorities. GOLOKGANJ, May 8: Three hard-core ULFA militants -- Samaresh Nath alias Dhananjay Nath alias Surya Bora of Bilasipara Hawraguri, Abul Kasem alias Kaji Ahmed of Madhushailmari and Ganesh Roy alias Dipen Roy of Basuatuli -- surrendered before the Deputy Commissioner, Dhubri, Ms Gayatri Barua, the Superintendent of Police, Mr Apurba Jeevan Barua, the Commandant, CRPF, Mr S.K. Kapoor and high officials of the district administration at the Circuit House in Dhubri at 10 a.m. today. They deposited two 9 mm revolvers, an AK-47 rifle and some ammunition.

Our Gauripur Correspondent adds: Dhubri police arrested one Harun Rashid at Kazipara in Chapar here last night and seized a pistol with five rounds of ammunition. [S]

Three hard-core ULFA ultras surrender

Dhubri, May 10: Three hard-core ULFA activists surrendered before the Deputy Commissioner, Dhubri in a solemn function organized in the conference hall of the Dhubri Circuit House at 10 a.m. on May 8. Mr Ganesh Roy alias Dwipen Roy who joined the banned organization in 1993 and had his training in Bhutan surrendered with a AK-47. Another activist Abul Kasem alias Kaji Ahmed, organizing secretary of Sintaduwar branch who joined the organization in 1989 also surrendered. The third a Samaresh Nath alias Surya Borah, another Bhutan trained member joined the organization in 1990, surrendered with rifle and some ammunition. [S]

GUWAHATI, May 16: Manju Nath alias Manisha Gupta alias Leena Gupta -- a woman cadre of the 'volcano' unit of the ULFA -- surrendered before the Kamrup police yesterday. [S]

Militancy scenario in the State

GUWAHATI, May 23: In Assam, altogether 214 civilians were killed in 447 violent incidents perpetrated by various extremist outfits during the year 1999. However, the magnitude of militancy came down to a certain extent during the year compared to 1998 during which as many as 531 civilians lost their lives in as many as 735 incidents of violence committed by militant groups in the State, a PIB release said. In 1999, a total of 212 extremists were killed in encounters and another 812 were arrested by police and paramilitary forces. During the year, 77 security personnel were killed and 44 arms were looted by extremist groups. On the other hand, police and paramilitary forces recovered 168 arms from militants, while as many as 970 militants surrendered during the year, the release added. [S]

NDFB ultra arrested

DHEKIAJULI, May 23: A surrendered NDFB ultras was arrested by the 15th Dogra Regiment's personnel at Dhekiajuli on May 21. According to Dogra Regiment sources, three NDFB (surrendered) ultra had come for extortion from a shop of Dhekiajuli town but the owner of that shop immediately informed the 15th Dogra Regiment, and the Army immediately reached the shop and caught an NDFB ultra but the other two ultra managed to escape. 18 Manipur ultras surrender

IMPHAL, May 26: Altogether 18 militants belonging to different outfits of Manipur on Thursday laid down arms at the banquet hall of the First Manipur Rifles battalion in presence of the Director General of Police, report agencies. The extremists surrendered M-20 rifles, AK-47 rifles, self-loading rifles, small arms and ammunition and wireless sets before State Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh. Of those, who surrendered, five belonged to the United Nationals Liberation Front (UNLF), as many to the Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), three to the Kanglei Yaol Kanna-Lup (KYKL-T), two to the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), as many to the KYKL (Oken group) and one to the People's Liberation Army (PLA). TEZPUR, May 27: The publicity secretary of ULFA's Lakhimpur district committee, Ms Kabita Rajbongshi today surrendered before the Sonitpur district Deputy Commissioner, Mr Naba Kumar Chetia. She had been arrested by the Army. [S]

Nine MULTA militants surrender

GUWAHATI, May 29: The head of the Sonamati unit of the MULTA, Abdul Motleb (25) surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Kumrup, with eight other cadres today. Police sources said that the MULTA rebels deposited a 303 rife, one 38 revolver, three live cartridges and some document related to the outfit, before the SP. [S]

25 ULFA militants surrender

GUWAHATI, May 30: Altogether 25 ULFA militants laid down their arms before the army authorities in Bongaigaon and Tangla today. According to Army sources, 19 militants surrendered at Tangla in Darrang district while six more gave up in Bongaigaon in separate functions where civilian authorities were also present. [AT]

20 militants surrender at Tangla

TANGLA, June 2: Twenty militants of different extremists groups including one woman surrendered before Col R Jetley and Pallab Bhattacharyya, SP, Darrang, in Tangla on Tuesday and decided to shun the path of violence and militancy and join the mainstream. In a surrender ceremony organised by Army in the Bordoloi Bhawan in Tangla, 20 militants in which there were nine from ULFA ten from NDFB and one from GNLF surrendered. [AT]

BONGAIGAON, June 2: Six ULFA militants of Bongaigaon district, surrendered with arms and ammunition, before Mr Kailash Chand Samuia, Deputy Commissioner, Bongaigaon in a brief function held on the occasion, at the DC's conference hall here on May 30, in the presence of Mr A K Saharia, SP, Bongaigaon and other officials concerned. The militants surrendered with one stengun and 35 rounds of ammunition. [S]

AIZAWL, June 6: At least 16 Hmar Revolutionary Front (HRF) militants would formally lay down arms here on Wednesday as part of the State government's efforts to bring the Hmar sub-tribe into the national mainstream, report agencies. [AT]

IMPHAL, June 14: Three militants belonging to the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and United National Liberation Front (UNLF) surrendered before the Chief Minister of Manipur, Mr W. Nipamacha here on June 13. The ultras, laid down an AK-56 rifle, a Chinese-made pistol with two magazines and 14 rounds of ammunition, an M-22 rifle with two rounds of ammunition, and an SLR with two magazines and 120 rounds of ammunition. GUWAHATI, June 21: The police arrested two surrendered BLT ultras and one surrendered NDFB ultras on charges of dacoity near Tarun Ram Phukan road in the city yesterday. The police also seized a Maruti van (AS-01 H-7988) from their possession. [AT]

AR jawans shoot dead 2 ADF cadres

DIBRUGARH, June 21: The troops of the 28th Assam Rifles busted a camp of the Arunachal Dragon Federation (ADF), a new ultra outfit formed by some surrendered militants belonging to the United People's Volunteers of Arunachal Pradesh under the leadership of one Chownomi Naamchum, and shot dead two ultras -- Motum Ibogodia Singh, a Manipuri youth from Silchar, and Engscy of Tezu district of Arunachal Pradesh -- in the thick Monabari reserved forest near Naamsai village in Arunachal Pradesh today. The troops recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition and incriminating documents from the camp. [S]

GUWAHATI, June 23: Bimal Deka alias Bipula Daimary -- a United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant -- surrendered before the Army today, a PIB (Defence Wing) release said. He also laid down a 7.62 mm SLR rifle. He had joined the outfit in 1989, the release added. [S]

GUWAHATI, June 28: The encounter by Army troops with ULFA militants in Lutumai Reserve Forest in Nagaon district bordering west Karbi Anglong which resulted in the killing of four hardcore militants has, a dealt a severe blow to ULFA organization, stated a PIB (Defence Wing) press release. Already riddled with mounting factionalism, increasing surrenders and desertions coupled with constant pressure by security forces have resulted in state of despair and gloom amongst the hierarchy. IMPHAL, June 29 (PTI): Two activists of the People's United Liberation Front (PULF) surrendered with arms to the Superintendent of Police, Imphal East, today. Official sources said the activists surrendered with two carbines, a country-made .38 revolver, a Chinese hand grenade and 92 live rounds of ammunition, the sources said. Meanwhile, an activist of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) identified as M Kenedy Singh was arrested by police from Gularthol in Imphal East district this morning. [S]

DIBRUGARH, July 2: Tinsukia police arrested two hard-core United Liberation Front of Asom militants -- Anirban Gohain and Jamaneswar Baruah alias Dinesh Baruah -- at Sadiya on June 30 and today respectively. According to a source, however, the two militants surrendered before the police. [S]

GUWAHATI, July 3 (PTI): An ULFA woman cadre and the wife of a top leader of the banned outfit have surrendered before the Army, Defence sources said here today. Juli Bora alias Roma Deka, wife of Kirti Borgohain alias Bhai Baruah, assistant secretary of ULFA's council headquarters had surrendered to the Army at Dinjan on June 27, the sources said. [S]

18 Manipur ultras lay down arms

IMPHAL, July 4: In an impressive function, a total of 18 underground activists belonging to different underground outfits laid down their arms before the State Chief Minister Whengbam Nipamacha Singh this morning. Those who surrendered along with their arms and ammunition include five KYKL (O), four PULF, four KCP, two INF, one PLA, one UNLF and one KYKL (T) activists. They surrendered with three .303 rifles, one G-2 rifle, one M-21 rifle with five different magazines incluidng 403 live rounds and a a walkie-talkie set. [AT]

GUWAHATI, July 7: Jalukbari police last night arrested five surrendered ultras of BLT from Amingaon area on charges of vandalism and extortion. Hard-core ULFA ultra Killed in city

GUWAHATI, Aug. 10: The City Police last night killed a self-styled Lieutenant Commander of "7 Battalion" of the ULFA, Krishna Gogoi alias Ratul Handique when he, along with three other hard-core ULFA militants, was on his way towards the city from the Gauhati University, Jalukbari side. However, three other militants managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Police said that Ratul was the brain behind several killings and bomb blasts by the ULFA. He was involved in the killing of Tapan Dutta and Maina Mahanta in the city in 1998 and the Principal of the Dibrugarh Medical College, Dr H.P. Baruah. He was also suspected to be involved at the Jalpaiguri train blast last year.

MORIGAON, Aug. 11: In a significant development, two high-ranking militants of the Tiwa National Revolutionary Front (TNRF) -- "chairman" Bhogeswar Bordoloi and "commander-in-chief" Janak Bordoloi -- surrendered before the police here on August 9, a delayed report said. It may be mentioned that a team of police had raided the house of Bhogeswar Bordoloi at Foliamari village under Mikirbheta police station on July 6 and seized some incriminating documents including the 'constitution' of the newly-formed outfit. 300 militants of various ultra outfits surrender

GUWAHATI, Aug. 14 As many as 288 militants belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB), the Rava National Security Force (RNSF), the Dimasa Halong Daoga (DHD) and the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) including top ULFA leader 'capt' Lohit Deuri joined the mainstream by laying down their arms at a surrender ceremony organized by the Kamrup district administration at the Rabindra Bhawan here today. The militants deposited their arms before Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and took oath to abide by the laws of the land.

Among the surrendered militants 242 were from the ULFA, five from the NDFB, 25 from the UPDS, 12 from the RNSF, two from the DHD and two from the MULTA. The surrendered militants deposited 52 arms including AK-56 rifles, AK-47 rifles, pistols, revolvers, SLRs, Chinese revolvers, etc.

Meanwhile, 12 hard-core ULFA militants today surrendered their arms before Colonel Jasbir Singh Bawa at a simple function organized at Mangaldai in Darrang district today. They deposited eight pistols, a 12-bore gun and some Chinese grenades. [S]

'ULFA leaders have become puppets of ISI'

GUWAHATI, Aug. 14: Top ULFA leader, who was in-charge of the general headquarters of the ULFA in Bhutan, "captain" Lohit Deurisaid, the leaders of the outfit, including the "commander-in-chief" Paresh Baruah, have become the puppets of the Pakistani ISI and Chinese 'Black House' spy agencies. Talking to news persons here today after his surrender before the State Chief Minister, Deuri said that the ULFA had reached an agreement with the Chinese "Black House" for the supply of arms to continue operation. He said that he had met the members of the "Black House" during his two-year stay in China. [S]

'I had joined ULFA with a vision'

GUWAHATI, Aug 14: Ms Parakh Moni Saikia who was holding her six-month-old baby at her lap in today's surrender ceremony told The Sentinel that she had joined the ULFA with a vision and was returning to the mainstream with disillusion. She had joined the ULFA in 1997 and involved herself with the activities at the outfits camps in Nagaland and Myanmar. She used to write pamphlets for the banned ULFA, she is the wife of ULFA militant Dhiren Gogoi. [S]

The ceremonial welcoming of the 288 militants to the mainstream by Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta at Rabindra Bhavan, Guwahati on the eve of the first Independence Day of the new millennium is an event of great significance because it has the potential for ushering in a new chapter of peace after protracted spell of insurgency. What made this ceremony different from other "surrender ceremonies" held earlier is the frank and bold assertion by some stalwarts of the ULFA about the growing differences within the leadership of the outfit and the disillusionment stemming from the leadership's helpless surrender to Pakistan's notorious ISI. Youth hurt in Army-ULFA shoot-out

NAGAON, Aug 17: A 23-year-old youth, Pradip Nath sustained bullet injuries during an encounter between the Army and a group of ULFA militants at Gaspara under Raha police station at 10 this morning. The ULFA team, led by one Dinesh, however, managed to escape. According to reports, Dinesh had had a quarrel with Pratap Deka of the outfit who was willing to lay down arms about 15 days back. During the scuffle, Pratap had snatched the AK-47 rifle of Dinesh. The Army has been searching the two since then. [S]

AGARTALA, Sept 5; September 5. The policy to find a solution to the insurgency problem through surrender with arms appears to have become a farce in Tripura. During the last two decades altogether 6,314 militants belonging to 29 groups laid down their arms but it has failed to raise even the slightest hope if an end to the militancy problem in the State. Four killed in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, Sept 25: In Seperate incidents, four persons including a municipal chairman were killed in Kokrajhar district in the last 24 hours. Sitting Municipal Board chairman Karuna Kanta Brahma (50) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen yesterday around 7.30 pm at his own residence in the heart of the town. Shockingly, police recovered another body with hands tied from back side and neck cut by sharp weapons from a nearby drain just 25 yards from the chairman's house this morning. Later, the body was identified as Hero Basumatary (60) a chokidar in the PTCA office hailing from Barpeta district.
Meanwhile, police said that a surrendered BLT ultra Monoj Basumatary (27) of Tengaigaon under Serfanguri PS was shot dead by unidentified gunman yesterday night. Another body of a youth was also recovered from Khagrabari village under Kokrajhar PS this morning. The body could not be idetified till filling of this report. [AT]

80% of ultras surrendered: Mahanta

GUWAHATI, Oct 11: Eighty per cent of the misguided youths who had joined various ultra outfits in the State joined the main stream of the society, Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta claimed this in his inaugural speech of the Mahikanta Saikia Bhavan constructed in the premises of Juria HS School at Juria in Nagaon district today, a press release states. Most of the remaining 20 per cent youths were also in touch with the State Government for laying down arms, Mr Mahanta added. [S]

4 of 40-man ULFA gang enter Morigaon

MORIGAON, Oct 11: Four of the 40-member group of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which had entered Nagaon recently, were seen moving in Manaha and Baha areas in Morigaon district. According to the district administration, the four-member gang of the "action group" of the ULFA led by Jiten Sarma entered Morigaon with a view to carrying out subversive activities in the district. A massive manhunt is on to nab the ULFA gang.

NAGAON, Oct 24: The "central political commissioner" of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Ananda Boro, Moon Boro, who is associated with the ULFA's mouth piece Liberation, and the top leader of the Kolong Kapili Anchalik Parishad of the outfit, Pawan Bora, in a communication with the police expressed their willingness to surrender. 68 ultras surrender at Bilasipara

GUWAHATI, Oct 25: Altogether 68 militants belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) and the MULTA surrendered before the Governor Lt Gen (Retd) SK Sinha and Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in a function held at Bilasipara in Dhubri district today. An official release said that those surrendered today included 54 ULFA militants, four NDFB and 10 MULTA militants. They laid down four AK-47 rifles, two US carbines, one SLR, one sten gun, several small arms like pistols and revolvers and a number of ammunition. [AT]

JORHAT, Nov 2: One Dimbeswar Gogoi, alias Binod Gohain, a member of 'army unit' of Puthimari branch of ULFA surrendered on October 30 before the SP, Jorhat district. He deposited two grenades with the police. The police sources said that the surrendered ULFA member is well trained in arms. [S]

JORHAT, Nov 3: Exasperated with anarchy and lack of any ideology among the top brass-especially ULFA 'C-in-C' Paresh Barua, a one-time close confidante of the rebel leader and a man 'who matters' in the entire outfit, Bhimkanta Buragohain aged 50 plus, along with Robin Handique and 33 others are likely to bid farewell to arms within a fortnight or two, according to Golaghat SP BR Das. GUWAHATI, Nov 9: A joint team of city police and CRPF managed to nab a ULFA woman cadre identified as Geeta Saikia (22) alias Barnali Kachari from a House in Barbela village under Chandrapur police station last night and recovered many incriminating documents relating to the outfit's activities.
Our Jorhat Correspond adds: The Jorhat police apprehended ULFA 'activist' Saurabh Pran Tamuly from the Tarajan Sanshan area here yesterday night. Having gone to Myanmar for guerrilla training, he had to return half way as he was taken ill. Tamuly had reportedly visited Myanmar with another ULFA cadre Utpal Kachari, who recently surrendered at Dibrugarh. [AT]

Tripura rebels buckle under tribal resistance

AGARTALA, Nov 3: The state's tribal community is headed for a virtual civil war over the issue of militancy and interference in the religious faith and tradition of Hindus by banned insurgent outfits. Responding to the call for active resistance by their hoda okra (head priest and community leader), the martial Jamatya tribals have declared war against militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura in the interior areas of the state. The Jamatyas are handing over militants to security forces or making them lay down arms to the Jamatya hoda (community council). [TT]

40 Nagaon, Dibrugarh ULFA men to surrender

GUWAHATI, Nov 23: About 40 ULFA cadres from Nagaon and Dibrugarh districts are sheltered in the city for surrender before the State Government in December. Sources told The Sentinel that the 40-member group includes the "commander" of the "action group" of Nagaon unit of the ULFA Suresh Bora, president of the Kalong-Kapili Anchalik Parishad of ULFA, Arun Bora and the "deputy commandant" of the "Volcano unit" Bidyut Kachari. Another top ULFA leader of Dibrugarh district, Tapan Baruah is likely to join the group to lay down arms. Sources disclosed that several more top leaders of the outfit are expected to surrender before the police and the Army soon. [S]

Meanwhile, the massive manhunt by the Central para-military and State security forces continued for the second day today to nab the militants responsible for yesterday's carnages claiming 16 lives at Kanchanpur in North Tripura. KACHUGAON, Nov 24: Five militants of Bengali Tiger Force (BTF) surrendered before the Superintendent of Police at a public meeting held at the conference hall of the Gossaigaon SDO (Civil) office recently. The surrendered militants were Raja Talukdar (21), Badal Das (18), Jhantu Dutta (21), Pradip Chandra (20) and Chandan Das (20). They also handed over some arms and ammunition, besides some official seals and pads of the outfit. [AT]

Extortion by ULFA continues

NAGAON, Nov 24: The extortion spree of the ULFA is in full swing collecting around Rs 50 lakh from several prominent doctors, businessmen in the Nagaon town, it is learnt. According to sources, the 40-member action group of the proscribed outfit led by Suresh Bora, which has been taking shelter at Guwahati to surrender, has collected around Rs 50 lakh within the period from November 1 to 15. The money is paid to a mediator, a lady worker of a political party, at gun-point. A certain businessman of Haiborgaon who had refused to pay, later after repeated threats paid about Rs 2 lakh, the source alleged. [S]

Jamatiya leader hacked to death by rebels

AGARTALA, Dec 4: Preparations for the plenary session of the Jamatya Hoda (community council) have received a jolt with the killing of a Hoda member last night. Police sources said Jalushmoni Jamatya (38), a surrendered militant and a government employee, was hacked to death in remote Teiharchong village under Udaipur police station last night. Jamatya was on his way to Haticherra village in south Maharani area to attend a convention of the Moyal Hoda (regional Jamatya council) when he was waylaid by NLFT marauders. His body was recovered by the police from Udaipur this morning. [TT]

150 ULFA militants to surrender

GUWAHATI, Dec 4: About 150 ULFA militants, including the top leaders of the outfit from Nagaon, Morigaon, Bongaigaon, Kamrup and Golaghat districts, are likely surrender in the city within this week. While 70 militants have already reached Guwahati for the surrender ceremony, the rest of the militants are reaching here in a day or two. Among the prominent ULFA leaders are the Nagaon district "commander" Suresh Bora and "chairman" of Nagaon district ULFA unit Arun Bora, official sources said here. [S]

Ulfa created ATF, killed Hindi speakers: Ex-rebel Ramen Nath

GUWAHATI, Dec 6: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) has carried out the recent cycle of carnage where 70 people, mostly Hindi-speaking, were massacred. This was disclosed by Captain Ramen Nath, the commandant of the Ulfa's Enigma unit, who surrendered before the state administration at the Dispur Parade Ground here on Wednesday morning. Nath also said that the outfit is under the clutch of the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI. [NED]

NEW DELHI, Dec 9: The Army is launching fresh operations in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to neutralise the outlawed ULFA killer squads sent on a mission to target non-Assamese communities and to destroy their base in the neighbouring State, official sources said here today. The security forces this week had some indication about the impending attacks on Thursday evening, when it intercepted a secret communication between commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah and his deputy Raju Baruah, in which he was reported to have instructed the latter to carry out strikes in the wake of the surrender by 160 armed cadres most of whom until recently were in camps in Bhutan. Attack on ULFA kin continues, 7 killed

TANGLA, Dec 10: Three members of a family -- Mr Nripen Boro (45), his son Putu Boro (22), a surrendered NDFB militant and Putu's wife Konika -- were shot dead by four unidentified gunmen at Nijkahibari village under Paneri police station in Darrang district at 9.30 last night.
Meanwhile, a United Liber-ation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant -- Mutlub Ali -- was killed and a civilian -- Majum Ali -- sustained injuries during an encounter between the Army troops and an ULFA gang at Kanbari village in Nalbari district in the wee hours today, a PIB release states.
PTI adds: Unidentified gunmen raided the house of Lakhan Rabha, elder brother of ULFA member Satrughan, and shot him dead at Dakuakata in Goalpara district, official reports here said. The gunmen then rushed to nearby Belpara village and set ablaze the house of ULFA "2nd lieutenant" Manoj Rabha. No one was injured in the incident as the thatched house was abandoned at the time of the attack.
Two bullet-ridden bodies -- one of Rabiram Brahma and another of Achinta Brahma, both aged 22 -- were found by police in an open field in Kokrajhar district. [S]

Attacks continue on Ulfa kin, NDFB kills 3

GUWAHATI, Dec 10: Mystery attacks continued on the family members of the Ulfa in the wake of the serial massacres in the state, even as authorities have decided to impose night curfew along the Indo-Bhutan border from Monday. A brother of an Ulfa member was shot dead in Goalpara district early Sunday. Suspected NDFB militants also shot dead one of their former colleagues, his father and sister in Darrang district Saturday evening. Police said heavily armed unidentified miscreants set ablaze Ulfa operational commander Drishti Rajkhowa's house at Belpara village under Rangjuli police station in Goalpara district. [NED]

GUWAHATI, Dec 10: At least eight persons including the brother of a United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant and one surrendered National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) man were killed in different parts of Assam since last night. [AT]

Woman hacked to death

AGARTALA, Dec 10: Rebels of the All-Tripura Tiger Force rebels shot and hacked to death a Bengali woman even as police gunned down a suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura militant involved in the stealing of images of Lord Buddha from a monastery in South Tripura during the past 24 hours. Three hardcore NLFT rebels, who had fled the outfit's hideout in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh, surrendered before the CRPF authorities yesterday. [TT]

2 NSCN (K) activists surrender

IMPHAL, Dec 10 (PTI): Two activists of the banned National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) today surrendered to Manipur Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh along with several arms. "Corporal" Kamei Janganpao and "lance corporal" RK Paojianlun Rongmei surrendered to Nipamacha Singh at the latter's official residence along with two AK 56 rifles, seven magazines, over 210 rounds of ammunition and a Chinese hand grenade. 10 NSCN ultras lay down arms in Nagaland

DIMAPUR (Nagaland), Dec 23: Signalling a ray of hope for peace, ten underground activists belonging to various factions of the NSCN today laid down their arms before the Army for the first time in Nagaland, reports UNI. The activists belonging to NSCN (IM), NSCN (K) and PULF laid down their arms before Maj Gen R N Kapur, GoC Nagaland, here in the headquarters of 64 Mountain Brigade. The activists also deposited eight weapons, including AK-56, two grenades, 14 magazines and 293 assorted ammunition. This is for the first time in Nagaland that NSCN activists have laid down their arms for rehabilitation to join the mainstream. [AT]

Shasha, Mithinga joining mainstream?

GOLAGHAT, Dec 27: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which has been demoralized following the large-scale surrender of its cadres in the recent past, will receive yet another major blow as its foreign secretary Shasha Choudhury is contemplating to join the mainstream of the society. According to an Intelligence source, Shasha, whose family members had been assassinated by "secret killers", almost disassociated himself from the banned outfit following a difference in opinion with the self-styled "C-in-C" of the outfit, Paresh Baruah. "Shasha will join the mainstream by January, 2001," the source said, adding that the publicity secretary of the banned outfit, Mithinga Daimary was also eager to lay down arms. [S]

15 BTF ultras surrender

NALBARI, Dec 16: The Bengali Tiger Force (BTF) suffered a major setback when atleast 15 militants of the outfit including its State secretary Parimal Das returned to mainstream giving farewell to arms today. The militants laid their arms in a surrender ceremony organised by Army at their Tamulpur camp. [AT]

Constable killed in mob attack

DHUBRI, Dec 18: A constable of 4th AP Battalion, Mr Deep Subuddar was killed by an irate mob at new market area here today. According to reports, getting the information of a scuffle between a surrendered militant and a video house owner Samir Ahmed four personnel of the police station rushed to the spot. Soon the irate mob attacked the police party with sharp weapons killing Deep Subuddar on the spot. The CRPF has been deployed in the area. Search is on for the miscreants. [S]

JAGIROAD, Dec 20: A hardcore United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant, Mitradhar Gogoi alias Uttam Gogoi alias Rakesh Moran, son of Biren Gogoi of No. 2 Morangaon under Titabor police station in Jorhat district, surrendered before the Army at Jagiroad in Morigaon district today. Kachin trained Mitradhar was a member of the "action group" of the banned outfit. He deposited a 9 m.m. revolver. [S]

HNLC cadre apprehended

SHILLONG, Dec 20: Police apprehended an HNLC militant from Dhankheti locality at around 1 p.m. here today. According to sources the militant has been identified as one Lunglang Nongsiej, a resident of Mawlai Nongmali. [S]

16 ULFA ultras surrender

NAGAON, Dec 21: About 16 cadres of the banned ULFA today surrendered before Mr S M Singh, SP, Nagaon. The surrender is said to have been masterminded by Suresh Bora, the recently-surrendered ULFA leader. Those who have surrendered include Sunil Bhuyan alias S Laskar, self-styled assistant commandant, Pranab Tamuli alias Pankaj Mahanta, and self-styled organizing secretary, Rabul Saikia alias Utpal Gohain. Insurgency-related violence marks 2000 in State

GUWAHATI, Dec 27: Insurgency-related violence continued to dominate Assam throughout the year with a reoriented ULFA killing more than hundred Hindi-speaking people even as the State Government induced many ultras to surrender, reports PTI. The first day of the millennium began with the ULFA blowing up an ONGC pipeline at Disangpani area in Sivasagar district damaging 20 ft of the Lakwa-Moran pipeline and causing damage worth Rs 6 lakh. NSCN(I-M) denies surrender by cadres

KOHIMA, Dec 29: NSCN(I-M) Thursday claimed that no member of the outfit laid down arms before the Army and described he December 23 surrender of ultras in Nagaland as 'stage managed', reports PTI. "No NSCN cadre surrendered with or without arms and the organisation is intact," NSCN (I-M) information and publicity secretary V Horam said in a statement received here. The outfit also cautioned the government to 'desist from indulging in such cheap propaganda' and demanded that security forces disclose identities of those who surrendered. Eight NSCN (IM), one NSCN (K) and one PULF (Pangal's United Liberation Front -- based in Manipur) activists surrendered before the Army authorities at Dimapur Brigade headquarters on December 23 to avail of the government's rehabilitation scheme. Does ULFA have camps in CHT?

SILCHAR, Dec 30: The recent media-blitzkreig over the death of Raju Baruah, second-in-command, and injury to Paresh Baruah, "commander-in-chief" of the ULFA in a controversial shoot-out, has brought to the fore the relevant question: Does the ULFA have camps in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)? There have been impeccable evidences about the location of the camps of the North-east militants in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan. The information have been based on interrogation of extremists who have surrendered to the security forces or been captured by them. [S]
