3 unidentified bodies recovered

GOLAGHAT, May 1: An unidentified body was recovered from Dighali Mising Gaon under Barpathar police station yesterday. Dergaon police also recovered an unidentified body from the Kakdonga river at Chumanigaon yesterday. Another body was recovered from a road near the Kamarbanda electricity board office yesterday. in this regard. [S]

16 picked up for interrogation, freed

GAURIPUR, May 1: Sixteen people were picked up for interrogation in connection with the killing of the BJP candidate for the Dhubri LS seat, Dr Pannalal Oswal, before the last LS elections. However, they were released later. It may be mentioned that an ULFA militant, Abdul Baten, who had been involved in the killing of Dr Oswal, was shot dead in an encounter with police at Asarkandi village on April 29 night. [S]

Dying statement of ULFA hard-core

BARPETA, May 1: A hard-core ULFA militant, one Nizamuddin, in a dying statement to the Barpeta police late in the evening yesterday, had said that a group of eight, heavily armed ULFA cadres, led by Dibakar Lahkar, is awaiting the arrival of some Pakistan's ISI agents at Sinadigaon near Kamalabari under Sarthebari police station. Nizamuddin, who was seriously injured in an encounter with the police near Kamalabari yesterday evening, died on way to Barpeta civil hospital here. Some arms and ammunition have been recovered from the spot. The others managed to escape, police sources said here. [S]

AGARTALA, May 1: Curfew was clamped and shoot-at-sight order issued following an ethnic violence which started after an extremists' attack killing two non-tribal at Jirania in West Tripura today, reports UNI. Official sources said here that the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) guerillas gunned down two non-tribals -- Gopal Baishnab and Krishna Debnath -- when the victims were working in their paddy field at Radhamohanpur under Jirania Police Station in West Tripura this morning. Immediately after the extremists attack, violent mob attacked tribals and some vehicles in the areas.
PTI adds: The banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) activists have kidnapped two persons from different parts of the State, police today said. [AT]

Ultras attack patrol party, kill one

GOLOKGANJ, May 1: One Abdul Rahman (26), was killed and another Guneswar Roy (46) seriously injured at Paglahat Bazar yesterday when a group of suspected NDFB militants armed with AK-47, AK-56 and SLR suddenly appeared at the market and opened fire against a patrol party of Assam Police battalion. 3 CPM supporters shot; 4 power Dept employees abducted

AGARTALA, May 4: National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants shot dead three CPI(M) supporters in Sidhai police station area last night and burnt down their houses. All the victims are tribals and belonged to one family. The NLFT attack came within hours of the second phase Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.
In another incident, four power department employees were abducted from North Tripura district yesterday. The employees were repairing a power line in remote Langtarai valley hill range when they were abducted. [AT]

Abducted person, son's bodies found, Dibrugarh shocked

GUWAHATI, May 7: Dibrugarh police on Sunday recovered the dead bodies of two persons -- Sibdhari Lal Paswan (45) and his son Dhiraj Paswan (10) -- from the sand banks in the middle of the Brahmaputra.The bodies had been buried in the sand and preliminary investigations revealed that sharp weapons had been used to kill the deceased, police said.On Thursday night, at around 8 P.M., Sibdhari Lal Paswan and his son were returning from his father-in-law's house in the Paltan Bazar area to his own residence near the Dibrugarh railway workshop by scooter bearing registration number AMB 8128. Apparently on the way, the two were abducted by unidentified persons, police sources said, adding that the scooter was later found at Santipara. [NED]

AGARTALA, May 8: National Liberation Front of Tripura militants shot dead three persons, including a CPM leader, and abducted a nine-year-old boy in separate incidents in the state over the past 24 hours. Five NLFT conduits were also arrested yesterday. [TT]

Administrative failure at Dibrugarh, two killed, curfew clamped

DIBRUGARH, May 8: The callous civil and police administrations, here today allowed what began as a funeral procession to lead to total breakdown of law and order resulting in the death of two and injury to five others. The dead have been identified as Mr Yusuf Khan (Babul), the proprietor of East End Hotel and Mr Jewan Ch. Pal, a UCO bank employee of Tengakhat. [S]

5 rebels killed in encounter off Tinsukia

DIBRUGARH, May 8: Three persons were killed and several others injured including police officials -- some of them seriously -- when police resorted to firing to disperse an unruly mob at Dibrugarh on Monday morning. A 14-hour curfew has been clamped in the town following the incident, and a magisterial-level enquiry has been ordered by the district administration.
Meanwhile, five Ulfa militants were killed, including a self-styled captain while 10 others were apprehended by security forces in two separate incidents in different parts of Assam during the last 24 hours. [NED]

Army shoots six ULFA militants dead

TINSUKIA, May 8: Army troops shot dead as many as five hard-core United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants at Kokojan under Doomdooma police station in Tinsukia district in the wee hours today. The killed militants were identified as -- self-styled captain Pradeep Gogoi alias Anil Konwar of Mukutkilla, Margherita, self-styled second lieutenant Praveen Gohain, self-styled lieutenant Ajar Dehingia, Abhijan Dale and Lakhi Moran. The Army recovered two AK-47 rifles, an AK-56 rifle, two hand-grenades, many cartridges and magazines from the site of the encounter. All the bodies have been handed over to the Doomdooma police station. Someswar Moran, the nephew of the killed ULFA cadre Lakhi Moran was apprehended.
Our Correspondent from Duliajan adds: In another incident a hard-core ULFA cadre -- Diganta Konwar (20) -- son of Mr Lila Konwar of village Nagajan near Lakhipathar was shot dead in an encounter with the Army today. [S]

IMPHAL, May 9: At least eight members of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were killed in an encounter with the Manipur Police commandos on Monday morning at Wangoo Lapham Khunou Awang Leikai in Thoubal district. [AT]

Day-night battle between NSCN factions off Mon
Dozens of militants feared killed

GUWAHATI, May 9: Fierce fighting has been continuing between the Naga rival factions of the NSCN(IM) and the NSCN(K) in Mon district of Nagaland since May 3. Unconfirmed report says that at least 70 militants of both the guerrilla groups have been killed in the fresh violence which turned worse on Sunday. However, official sources claimed that only five rebels were killed in the gunfire between the two groups. Sources said that after receiving information about the presence of NSCN(IM) militants in the forest areas of the district, hundreds of NSCN(K) militants gheraoed the area from three sides and started a massive attack to flush out their rivals. In the ensuing gun battle, the militants were reportedly killed. [NED]

BISWANATH CHARIALI, May 10: Three bicycle-born suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants shot at and injured the Principal of Dalonguri Higher Secondary School, Mr Yogananda Kurmi (48) in his residence at Borpam Tiniali under Satia police station at 9.30 a.m. today. According to police sources, Mr Kurmi, who received bullet injuries in a hand and a leg, is out of danger. Search is on to nab the culprits. [S]

NAGAON, May 11: An ULFA militant was killed in an encounter with police at Hukatipara village in Nagaon district this morning. the militant -- Santanu Lahkar hailed from Hukatipara (Milanpur) near Tulashimukh under Nagaon Sadan police station. A .38 revolver was recovered from the militant. Police also picked up four persons for interrogation. [S]

Prime suspect of Paswans' killing nabbed

DIBRUGARH, May 11: Nayan Das alias Guli, a former ULFA militant who had surrendered in 1994, and the prime suspect in the killing of Sewdhari Paswan and his son Dhiraj, was apprehended by the Dibrugarh police today. Some other surrendered ULFA activists were also picked up for interrogation in connection with the killing. [S]

Tripura sees spurt in revenge violence; security tightened

AGARTALA, May 11 : Fresh tension prevails in West Tripura district on Wednesday following reports of clash between tribals and non-tribals. In a revenge retaliation, one Rajib Das Choudhury -- son of a victim of the infamous bazar colony massacre where 25 people were killed -- along with his accomplices reportedly murdered a tribal youth at Kalyanpur. To quell the violence, additional forces had to be sent to the strife-torn area. [NED]

GUWAHATI, May 13: Two militants and a woman, were killed during an encounter between police and UPDS militants at Tiring, 12 km from Hamren in Karbi Anglong at 12.30 pm today. The civilian woman was caught in the crossfire. Another woman and two children were injured. [AT]

Two tea officials abducted in Tripura

AGARTALA, May 13: The outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants on Saturday kidnapped the assistant manager and garden supervisor of Golakpur tea estate in Kailasahar subdivision in North Tripura district. CP Thakur, assistant manager and Bipad Bhanjan Das, garden supervisor had gone for inspection when a heavily armed gang of about eight militants kidnapped them at gunpoint. Last of the tea executives killed by militantswas DK Nath, Manager of Dharmanagar tea garden. He was shot dead and his wife was injured on February 18 last by NLFT militants. Almost all gardens have to pay huge subscriptions to the militants. [AT]

Narrow escape

GUWAHATI, May 13: One hardcore ULFA militant Bakul Deuri alias Mistri had a narrow escape after an encounter with the police at Bidyadapri under Sagalia outpost in Dhubri district this afternoon. Deuri, an action group member of the ULFA was spotted near a beel by the police at around 3 pm but he managed to escape after a brief exchange of fire. [AT]

Youth stabbed to death

DIBRUGARH, May 16: Unidentified scooter-borne assailants stabbed to death Deepak Neog (23), the owner of a wayside kiosk, at Lezai Kalakhowa here this morning. It may be mentioned that the Lezai Kalakhowa area has witnessed several secret killings. Mr Neog had been abducted along with two others by unidentified 'secret killers' last year also. But he somehow managed to escape from their clutches. The bodies of the other two persons were recovered later. [S]

IMPHAL, May 16: Suspected activists of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) on Monday ambushed a CRPF patrol party killing a jawan in Manipurs Bishnupur district, reports PTI. [AT]

ULFA harbourer injured in shoot-out

GUWAHATI, May 16: An ULFA harbourer -- Dhananjay Sarkar was injured during an encounter between the Army and ULFA militants at Hong Naomati village in Nalbari district in the wee hours today, a PIB (Defence Wing) release said. Ms Chanchala Sarkar, the sister of Dhananjay also sustained injuries. A .32 revolver and two rounds of ammunition along with nine empty AK-47 and 9 mm ammunition were recovered from the site. [S]

Two militants killed in Karbi encounter, 3 lynched

JORHAT, May 18: Two United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) militants were killed in an encounter with the police at Bogamati under Bokajan police station in Karbi Anglong today. The militants are yet to be identified. A pistol, several rounds of AK-47 bullets and incriminating documents were recovered.

Three lynched: Irate villagers of Cachar district lynched three activists of the Barak Valley Youth Liberation Front at Lalkhal bustee, 35 km from here, last night, reports our Silchar correspondent. The militants were identified as Prabir Das (29), self-styled commander-in-chief of the outfit, Benu Das (28) and Bishal Roy (19). [TT]

Attack on DC's convoy
Magistrate among 6 killed in NC Hills

GUWAHATI, May 18: Six persons including an Executive Magistrate were killed when militants ambushed the convoy of North Cachar Hills Deputy Commissioner near Umrangsu around five pm this evening. Police sources in Haflong informed that Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tanu Singh escaped unhurt while six other persons including Executive Magistrate MK Gogoi were killed in the ambush. The driver of the DC's vehicle was also killed in the incident. Magistrate Gogoi was travelling in the same vehicle with the Deputy Commissioner. [AT]

6 Manipur ultras killed in encounter

IMPHAL, May 18: Six suspected activists of the banned People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel at Wangkhei area near here today, reports PTI. Some members of the security personnel were also injured in the encounter but their exact number was not yet known, official sources said. [AT]

AGARTALA, May 19: Outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants have stepped up their bloody offensives throughout the State while ethnic tension has risen to alarming heights. NLFT rebels shot dead six non-tribals at Bampur in South Tripura district on Thursday night. [AT]

Eight killed, 20 injured in Tripura violence

AGARTALA, May 20: Indefinite curfew was imposed in Kalyanpur under West Tripura district where at least eight persons, including two women and a child, were killed and more than 20 injured in separate incidents since last evening. Police sources said a group of United Bengali Liberation Front (UBLF) militants today lobbed bombs at a passenger jeep coming from North Maharanipur under Khowai subdivision killing five tribals and injuring 11.
Last night, UBLF rebels attacked Gudaibari village under Kalyanpur police station killing a tribal woman, Rajmala Debbarma (26). Five others -- Sushanto Debbarma(3), Sukhini Debbarma (60), Mamata Debbarma(18), Benoy Debbarma (23) and Bijli Debbarma(21) -- were admitted to the G. B. Hospital with serious injuries. Sources said the attack was aimed at avenging the killing of a woman by insurgents at neighbouring Maijbhandar village on Thursday. [TT]

Curfew in Tripura

AGARTALA, May 20: Curfew was imposed for an indefinite period and shoot-at-sight orders were issued today in the Teliamura and Kalyanpur police station areas of West Tripura district where at least 15 persons, including two women and a child, were killed and 13 others injured in separate incidents since last evening. [AT]

2 NDFB ultras gunned down

GUWAHATI, May 20: The Army today shot dead two NDFB militants at Kalipur No. 2 village near Kumarikhata in Nalbari district. An AK-56 rifle along with a magazine, ammunition and used cases were recovered from the slain militants who are yet to be identified. Some incriminating documents were also found in their possession. Tripura violence toll goes up to 30; shoot-at-sight ordered

AGARTALA, May 21: At least 15 people, including children and women, were massacred and several injured by NLFT insurgents in West Tripura district on Saturday night, official sources said on Sunday. The ultras raided a school, in Baghbar village under Kalyanpur police station, where people from neighbouring villages had taken shelter, threw grenades and opened indiscriminate firing, killing 15 people and injuring many, the sources said. With this, the toll in ethnic clashes since Friday has risen to 30. [AT]

19 killed in Tripura massacre rerun

AGARTALA, May 21: In a massacre reminiscent of the one at Gourangatilla early this year, National Liberation Front of Tripura militants mowed down 19 non-tribals in Bagber village under Khowai subdivision of West Tripura district last evening. Seven more were killed at Ratiya and Chakmaghat under the same subdivision this morning, raising the toll in militant attacks over the past 48 hours to 34. The West Tripura district administration today issued shoot-at-sight orders in Khowai and asked the Army to be on call. [TT]

Tripura ethnic riot toll 43, bandh today

AGARTALA, May 22: The death toll in the past three days of ethnic violence in the Kalyanpur police station area in Khowai sub-division has risen to 43 with the recovery of two more bodies from the worst-affected Bagber village. They are yet to be identified.
Another person, identified as Rabi Roy, died of his injuries in Teliamura hospital after being shot during a rebel attack on Chakmaghat market under Teliamura police station last evening.
Sources from Amarpur subdivision said the body of Tripura State Rifles jawan Rabilal Das, who had been kidnapped from his residence in the Malbasa area of Amarpur on Friday, was recovered from a jungle near Malbasa.
The Congress, Trinamul and the ruling Left Front have called 12-hour state bandh tomorrow to protest the ethnic violence in Khowai over the past three days. The Congress has extended its bandh call by another 12 hours. [TT]

TINSUKIA, May 23: Two suspected ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with the Army at Takerigaon in Pangeri under Digboi police station this morning. The Army recovered a pistol, an AK-56 rifle and magazines from the site. [S]

Militancy scenario in the State

GUWAHATI, May 23: In Assam, altogether 214 civilians were killed in 447 violent incidents perpetrated by various extremist outfits during the year 1999. However, the magnitude of militancy came down to a certain extent during the year compared to 1998 during which as many as 531 civilians lost their lives in as many as 735 incidents of violence committed by militant groups in the State, a PIB release said. In 1999, a total of 212 extremists were killed in encounters and another 812 were arrested by police and paramilitary forces. During the year, 77 security personnel were killed and 44 arms were looted by extremist groups. On the other hand, police and paramilitary forces recovered 168 arms from militants, while as many as 970 militants surrendered during the year, the release added. [S]

3 tribals lynched in Tripura village

AGARTALA, May 23: A mob lynched three tribals in north Maharanipur village under Tripura's riot-torn Khowai subdivision yesterday, raising the toll in ethnic violence over the past four days to 48. Sources said the slain tribals were part of a group which had been looting houses deserted by villagers. [TT]

One burnt alive by NLFT

AGARTALA, May 25: The banned NLFT militants burnt alive a tribal man and injured another, while security forces recovered huge materials from a rebel hideout after a fierce encounter in Tripura on Wednesday night, reports UNI. Meanwhile, West Tripura district magistrate Manoj Kumar told UNI that the curfew continued for the sixth day on Thursday in violence-hit Khowai sub-division. The situation is under control and there is no fresh incident during the past three days, Kumar said, adding that the Army, paramilitary and State security forces continued vigil in the troubled areas, which witnessed ethnic and militant violence recently claiming 45 lives. Militants also burnt down several houses. More than 9000 families were still in the relief camps and the government was providing relief, he added. [AT]

Headman shot dead

SHILLONG, May 25: A 60-year-old headman of Rajajlu village in West Khasi Hills was shot dead by Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) militants last evening. The killing took place within 24 hours of the withdrawal of a police platoon from Rajajiu, where it had been posted after the ANVC held hundreds of coal trucks to ransom in February. Linus Marak, the headman, was shot dead from point blank range by four men dressed in Army fatigues. They also torched the shed where the policemen had left some of their belongings. Two platoons of policemen have been posted in the Borsora-Rajajlu area. [TT]

Aizawl tense over rape

SILCHAR, May 25: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl, a student's organisation in Mizoram, will bar movement of non-Mizos in Aizawl for two days from tomorrow to protest against the rape and murder of a Mizo girl. Police said 14-year-old Lalrindiki, daughter of one Abdul Khaleq and Saitingpui, had been missing since May 18. She was killed by one Afzal Hossain, 18, after having been repeatedly raped. Her body, wrapped in a sack, was recovered from the Burrabazar in Aizawl on Sunday morning. Hossain has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. [TT]

DIBRUGARH, May 26: Two ULFA activists were killed during an encounter with an Army-police combined search in the deep forests near Pengeri. Police recovered an AK-56 rifle and a .32 Chinese pistol from the scene. [S]

14 Manipur ultras killed during May

IMPHAL, May 26: At least 14 activitists were killed while 78 other were arrested by the police during this month, official sources said. Of the arrested, 11 were recommended for detention under the National Security Act (NSA), the sources said on Thursday. Police killed eight United National Liberation Front (UNLF) members and six People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) members in two different incidents. [AT]

GUWAHATI, May 27: Army personnel today shot dead a militant who along with an associate attacked their patrol moving from Tangla town to Tangla College in lower Assam, official sources said here. Ten militants from different organisations were arrested in different parts of lower Assam, the sources said. [AT]

Swadhinata Phukan shot dead

GUWAHATI, May 27: The militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today suffered a major setback as its self-styled assistant publicity secretary and central committee leader Swadhinata Phukon alias Kabiranjan Saikia was killed by police in a pre-dawn operation in Jorhat district. [AT]

3 of a family among 6 killed in ULFA revenge attack at Tinsukia

GUWAHATI, May 27: Suspected Ulfa militants gunned down six persons, including three of a family, in a revenge attack at No 2 Magumgaon village under Pangeri police station in Tinsukia district on Friday night. Police said the rebels , numbering around six and dressed in Army fatigue, gheraoed the house of one Krishna Karki (50) around 1:30 A.M. on Friday.
Police suspect the incident to be a revenge attack. Earlier, the outfit had served extortion noti-ces to Karki and another person, who were citro-nella traders. The matter was brought to the notice of the police. And when on April 28, when a group of Ulfa men came to collect the money, policemen posted at Karki's residence killed one militant. The Tinsukia SP said that Karki had already paid Rs 50, 000 to the rebels. [NED]

Killing of Nepalis condemned

GUWAHATI, May 28: The central committee of Assam Gorkha Sammelan, Guwahati has strongly condemned the inhuman killing of six persons of Nepali community, of No. 2 Mugang Pathar village under Pengery police station in Tinsukia district by the ULFA militants on Saturday at about 1.30 am and setting ablaze their houses. GAURIPUR, May 28: Mr Ashok Chakraborty, assistant manager of Chaibari Tea Estate was kidnapped by suspected Adivasi militants from the tea estate's factory. In another incident, suspected MULTA activists killed a youth, Dipak Kalita at Sapatgram on May 26. [S]

SHILLONG, May 28: A heavy exchange of fire took place between a five-member group of militants comprising four top-level leaders of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and an ANVC ultra, and a police patrol party at Laskarpara village under Phulbari police station, a report received here today said. The militants managed to escape. No casualty is reported. [S]

Couple gunned down in Tripura

AGARTALA, May 28: Militants shot dead one Mohan Miyan and his wife Soraprai Bibi at Raiyabari area yesterday. The couple, who had gone there for grazing cattle, did not turn up. Their bodies were recovered by the villagers this morning. Besides bullet injuries, the two bodies bore injury marks inflicted by sharp weapons. It may be mentioned that at least 20 girls and house wives had been raped within a month in the Raiyabari area. [S]

Curfew on in trouble-torn Khowai

AGARTALA, May 29: Tribal guerillas shot dead two persons and abducted as many fishermen in South Tripura on Saturday night even as curfew continued for the ninth day on Sunday in the violence-hit Khowai sub-division under West Tripura district, reports UNI. [AT]

UDALGURI, June 2: Three persons were injured in a grenade attack by some unidentified miscreants in a hardware shop at Harisinga yesterday evening. The hand grenade was powerful and China-made, police sources said. People suspect the involvement of the NDFB ultras in the attack as the shop-owner, one Moti Das, had received an extortion note demanding Rs 1.5 lakh from the NDFB. [S]

IMPHAL, June 10: Award-winning Sahitya Akademi playwright Arambam Somorendra, who was also the founder general secretary of the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was assassinated this morning at Khurai Salanthong. An unidentified gunman shot dead the sexagenarian playwright while he was attending a seminar on "Women's Shumang Leela in Manipur." He is survived by his wife and four sons. [TT]

Man hacks wife to death

JORHAT, June 11: One Ajoy Das of Majuli, staying at Tarajan, Jorhat, hacked his wife Baruali Das (19) on the open street after a long chase today. The injured wife was admitted to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Ajoy Das is absconding. [S]

BISWANATH CHARIALI, June 11: Police recovered the body of an unidentified youth from Sonai Pathar area last night. According to police, a bottle of insecticide was found from near the body. The local people said that the youth was not from the locality. [S]

SHILLONG, June 19: Two extortionists were lynched and a third was seriously injured by villagers of Mawklot village in Upper Shillong here last night. Police sources said three miscreants went to the residence of the village headman around 8.50 last night and demanded money from him. Hearing shouts for help, the villagers came to his rescue and apprehended the miscreants. They were then severely assaulted by the villagers. Two of the extortionists died on the way to the civil hospital here while the third has been admitted. [AT]

Bangla Army kills 11 NLFT cadres, vigil intensified

AGARTALA, June 19: The Tripura Government is keeping a strict vigil along the international border following the reported killing of 11 NLFT militants by the Bangladeshi Army at Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) some time last week. Security officials apprehend a major influx of militants, who are now camping at their hide-outs in Bangladesh to escape the Bangladeshi Army's dragnet.
IANS in Guwahati adds: In April, at least 62 separatists from the North-east were arrested by troops in Bangladesh during a massive anti-terrorist offensive. The arrested separatists belonged to the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), both separatist guerrilla groups fighting in Assam for independence, besides a few from the NLFT and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). DIBRUGARH, June 20: Two CRPF jawans were killed in an encounter between a police-CRPF team and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants at Guguloni village under Naharkotiya police station this morning. Meanwhile, a joint team of police and Army apprehended an UNLF militant, Ratan Sharma from near Lakshmijan Tea Estate along Assam-Nagaland border under Geleki police station in Sivasagar district after an encounter and a night-long search in the wee hours today. Two CRPF men among 4 killed in Assam violence

GUWAHATI, June 20: Altogether four persons, including two CRPF personnel, were killed in two separate incidents in different parts of Assam during the last 24 hours. Police said that acting on a tip-off on an Ulfa hideout, a joint team of Assam police and paramilitary forces raided Ghogolani village under Naharkatia police station in Dibrugarh district arounnd 4.30 AM on Tuesday. The security men gheraoed the residence of one Gobinda Sonowal in search of a top Ulfa leader, when the rebels hiding inside the house fired upon the police team. A gunbattle ensued in which, two CRPF men were killed on the spot. However, the militants were made good their escape from the police dragnet.
In another incident, security forces killed two militants belonging to People's United Liberation Front (PULF) in an encounter at Motinagar in Cachar district Tuesday. One SBBL gun, one AK-47 magazine and a huge cache of ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. [NED]

ULFA ultra killed in encounter

GUWAHATI, June 21: One ULFA militant was killed in an encounter with police at Telijan on NH 52 near Dhemaji at about 10.30 last night. Police sources said the slain ultra identified as Pranjal Dihingia alias Parag Gogoi sustained bullet injuries and died on way to the Civil Hospital. [AT]

AR jawans shoot dead 2 ADF cadres

DIBRUGARH, June 21: The troops of the 28th Assam Rifles busted a camp of the Arunachal Dragon Federation (ADF), a new ultra outfit formed by some surrendered militants belonging to the United People's Volunteers of Arunachal Pradesh under the leadership of one Chownomi Naamchum, and shot dead two ultras -- Motum Ibogodia Singh, a Manipuri youth from Silchar, and Engscy of Tezu district of Arunachal Pradesh -- in the thick Monabari reserved forest near Naamsai village in Arunachal Pradesh today. The troops recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition and incriminating documents from the camp. [S]

School teacher shot dead

TEZPUR, June 21: A schoolteacher has been shot dead and three persons have been wounded critically by antisocials at Gendhuwabill village near here. At least 10 antisocials went to the village on Sunday night and opened fire on the villagers, the police said here today. While their target managed to escape unhurt, the police said, the schoolteacher, identified as Monaruddin Ansari, was killed in the incident. The critically injured had been taken to hospital. Investigations were on. [S]

4 gunned down by NDFB ultras

GUWAHATI, June 22: Four persons including a six-year old child were killed by suspected National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) militants near Kumarikata in Nalbari district late last night. Army sources said that those families were given extortion notice in April, while, on May 20, two NDFB militants were killed by the Army in the same area. These might be the reasons behind the killing, sources said. Meanwhile, Army apprehended two ULFA linkmen from the Borbori area of Nalbari district today. [AT]

SI's body recovered

GUWAHATI, June 22: Azara police recovered the body of sub-inspector Mahesh Medhi (45) of the Special Branch office at Kahilipara in the city from the low-lying area near Rani Chowk at 5 this evening. The body had injury marks on the neck and the head inflicted by sharp weapons and the deceased had not returned to his home at Baruapara near Azara since 10 am yesterday when he left office to visit his home.
Meanwhile, Khetri police this morning recovered the naked body of one Khagen Thakuria (30) of Dolguri village near his home. Dog squad has been pressed into service to nab the culprits, police sources said. [AT]

Two killed by Karbi rebels, autonomous council member survives attack

GUWAHATI, June 23: Atleast two persons were killed and four injured in separate incidents in different parts of Karbi Anglong district during the last 24 hours while one executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) survived a bid on his life on Friday. Sources said one Jiten Borah was killed and Lalita Devi injured when suspected United People's Solidarity (UPDS) militants torched several houses at Cherpahguri village under Kheroni police station in Karbi Anglong district on Thursday at around 2:10 A.M.
In yet another incident, one Nivas Chauhan was killed and three others -- Indradev Chauhan, Mitali Chauhan and Sujan Chauhan -- were injured when a group of 10 to 12 suspected UPDS militants swooped down on their village Jongkam, near Hamren, and opened indiscriminate fire. [NED]

Former ULFA rebel gunned down

JORHAT, June 25: The bullet-riddled body of surrendered Ulfa leader Tarun Phukan, alias Amrit, was recovered from a paddy field near Amguri town in upper Assam's Sivasagar district this morning. Two empty AK-47 cartridges and Amrit's motorcycle were found at the site. Police suspect the Ulfa of having killed Amrit, who was a "second lieutenant" in the banned outfit before surrendering with 531 other militants at the Rang Ghar in Sivasagar on April 4. [TT]

Action group ULFA men die in encounter

GUWAHATI, June 25: Four Ulfa militants were killed in Assam by the Army yesterday. Assistant foreign secretary of the Ulfa central committee Prashant Bora alias Pradeep Choudhury and three other militants of the action group of the outfit were shot dead by the Army in an encounter on Saturday in a reserve forest in Nagaon district bordering Karbi Anglong.
In a separate incident in Sonitpur district, six Adivasi Security Force militants were apprehended by the Army from Orang village near Itakhola. Extorted cash to the tune of Rs 11,000, silver jewellery and incriminating documents were recovered from them. [TT]

BILASIPARA, June 26: Suspected National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) militants gunned down five wood-cutters at Oksibari village under Bagaribari police station in Dhubri district on Saturday, according to a delayed report. The deceased have been identified as Rajeswar Marak, Joga Sangma, Ladison Marak, Ranjit Sangma and Binod Brahma. [AT]

GUWAHATI, June 29 (UNI): Suspected NDFB militants shot dead three persons, including a woman, at Ouguri village under Goreswar police station of Kamrup district last night. Police said the victims were identified as Mujibur Rehman, Siraj Ali and Asrafa Begum. The militants called out the victims from their houses and gunned them down. High civil and police officials rushed to the spot and launched a vigorous search operation to apprehend the militants, police added. [S]

GUWAHATI, June 30: Three policemen were killed and two others injured when Dima Halong Dougah (DHD) militants ambushed the vehicle of the Deputy Commandant of Assam Police Commando Battalion and his escort vehicle at a place between Thanalambra and Dihangi in North Cachar Hills district at around 11 a.m. today. 3 persons shot dead in Manipur

IMPHAL, June 30: At least three persons including a girl were shot dead in separate incidents in Churachandpur and Imphal East districts of Manipur. Official sources here on Friday said that unidentified gunman shot dead a 22-year-old girl at Konpui village in Churachandpur district on Wednesday. She was abducted by gunmen from her house and later shot her dead near a paddy field at Konpui village. The motive behind the killing is yet it be ascertained, the sources said. In another incident, two suspected cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) were killed in a shootout with activists of another rival outfit at Laltingkhal on Jiribam-Tipamukh road in Imphal East district on Wednesday, the sources said. Links of the killers of the 20-year-old girl with the recently-formed Indigenous People's Revolutionary Alliance (IPRA) was being investigated, official sources said. [AT]

AIZAWL, June 30: At least seven members of the elite anti-terrorist Hunter Force of the Mizoram Police were killed and four others injured in an ambush by suspected Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) militants along the Indo-Bangladesh border today. [AT]
