Ratneswar Sarma shot dead

GUWAHATI, Jan 1: Sri Ratneswar Sharma, Jalah Correspondent of The Assam Tribune and Dainik Asom was shot dead by suspected ULFA militants in Majarmakha village in Pathsala area of Barpeta district in broad daylight yesterday. The 82-year-old Sri Sharma, a freedom fighter was a correspondent of The Assam Tribune since 1981. [AT]

ITANAGAR, Jan 4: An undertrial died in Ziro district hospital on January 1last while in police remand, according to police here. The deceased, Ngilyang Tagia, an active member of National Liberation Front of Arunachal (NLFA), was arrested by Ziro police from Hapoli market on December 25 last when he was serving an extortion note for Rs 5 lakh to a trader,the sources said. IMPHAL, Jan 6: At least nine Assam Rifles personnel were killed and another eight were injured in an ambush by militants at Lamlai in Imphal East district of Manipur this evening. [AT]

Villagers flee as NLFT ultras torch 65 huts

AGARTALA, Jan 7: A total of 65 huts of 38 tribal families have been set ablaze by insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) in three villages of South Tripura district forcing about 50 people to take shelter elsewhere, police said on Friday, reports PTI. The ultras armed with sophisticated weapons raided Kashi Chandrapara, Rambhaktapara and Bhaktamohan Maluumpara and set ablaze 65 houses on Thursday police said, adding, the ultras also opened fire to scare the villagers and threatened of dire consequences if they tried to resist. Earlier on January 5 last, ultras of the same outfit set ablaze 10 huts in the area. [AT]

GUWAHATI, Jan 9: Five unidentified bodies were recovered from Dichang Kinar Bengali village of Namrup this morning, informed police sources. Two of the bodies bore gunshot injuries while the other three bore stab injuries. [AT]

12-hour Kokrajhar bandh on Jan 12

GUWAHATI, Jan 10: The Kokrajhar District unit of the Ex-Servicemen Association has given a call for a 12-hour Kokrajhar District bandh from 6 am of January 12 in protest against the killing of an ex-serviceman Capt Bishnu Prasad Roy in Diajijari village by unidentified miscreants. The association, in a release, said that the incident took place at 7.15 pm on January 7 when Capt Roy was in a meeting with villagers. The miscreants called him out of the meeting and shot him dead from a short range. Capt Roy joined the Indian Army in 1963 and retired in '91. [AT]

IMPHAL, Jan 14: The outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL), Oken faction, has claimed responsibility for the killing of Loktak Project Chief Engineer Subash Chandra Sher, saying he was gunned down for not complying with its demand for payment of "taxes". Sher, despite knowing that KYKL had been collecting "taxes" from both State and Central government officials stationed here for some years, refused to comply with its tax demand, KYKL (Oken) said in a statement issued here. GUWAHATI, Jan 24: A hard-core cadre of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) -- Amli Boro, an "action group" member of the outfit - was killed in an encounter with Army troops operating in Nalbari district today. In another incident Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) militant Bejabar Rahman was apprehended from village Joraang Pathar in Nagaon district today. A powerful bomb was recovered from him, the release states, adding that four United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were also apprehended from Nalbari during the last 24 hours. [S]

SILCHAR, Jan 25: A CRPF patrol was ambushed last night at Harangajao township in North Cachar Hills district of South Assam. A CRPF jawan was killed and a havildar seriously injured. The ambush was carried out by militants of the Dima Halam Daoga (DHD), an outfit of Dimasa tribals. [TT]

Rebels gun down three, blow up pipeline, power towers on R-day

GUWAHATI, Jan 27: Suspected militants gunned down three persons, blew up two electric towers and a gas pipeline, detonated a bomb and engaged in encounter with security forces in separate incidents of violence in different parts of the state on Republic Day.

Suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) rebels gunned down three woodcutters near the Nangalbhanga river at Narayanguri under Kokrajhar district on Wednesday morning.

In another incident, militants blew up a portion of 132 KV Gossaigaon-Gauripur single circuit electric tower with remote-control devices at Joldapara in Dhubri district on Wednesday night. Militants also blew up another tower of the Power Grid Corporation at Gharagaon on Darrang district on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, suspected Ulfa militants blew up a gas pipeline of the Oil India Limited at Gathupathar in Sasoni under Naharkatia police station in Dibrugarh district on Wednesday night. The line carried gas from the Salmari oilfield to the gas collecting station number one.

Militants also detonated a bomb on a RCC road bridge at Garigaon in Kokrajhar district. However, there were no reports of any damage.

PATHSALA, Feb 1: Unidentified gunmen shot dead two persons and injured another at Dumuriagaon here at around 10 last night. According to reports the villagers heard sounds of firing at around 10 last night. After a while, two persons with serious bullet injuries asked for shelter ina house at Dumuriagaon. On being informed of the incident police soon rushed to the spot. One of the injured,Abdul Jalil of Hawli breathed his last on way to the Pathsala Hospital. The other, Hazrat Ali of Dhubri is under treatment. On the other hand police recovered the body of another man in a jungle near the site of firing. [S]

SONAPUR, Feb 4: Sonapur Police last night recovered a body from a field near the NH at Patarkuchi area. The body has been identified as that of Kamaldhari Singh, driver of a car taken away by two miscreants at gunpoint several days back from Paltanbazar area. [AT]

New facts on killing unearthed

NAGAON, Feb 6: Though the police could not make any breakthrough into the abduction and subsequent killing of three youths -- Jayanta Saikia, Pradip Saha and Bonwarilal Dhote -- whose bodies were recovered at Betoni near Burapahar here yesterday, journalists could unearth some facts in connection with the case. According to reports, one of the killed youths, Jayanta Saikia, the son of AGP's Difaloo Anchalik Parishad president Pohar Saikia had been an ULFA cadre who surrendered five years back and managed to set the job as a schoolteacher. But even after his surrender Jayanta had been maintaining a close link with the ULFA and was engaged in a fund-raising drive by the outfit along with Pradip and Bonwarilal. The trio had collected a huge amount of money and kept it at his rented house at Laokhowa Road. On being informed about the cash the trio had amassed, the killers abducted the three on February 3 and killed them later. [S]

IMPHAL, Feb 6: After the killing of a Janata Dal (United) candidate in the Churachandpur district, the security guards of a sitting MLA last night shot dead a youth and wounded two others. [S]

SDO shot at in office complex, PSO killed

AGARTALA, Feb 6: Seven persons were detained in connection with the bid on the life of Mr Sukram Debbarma, SDO, Sadar. His personal bodyguard Ratan Gosh died in the attack while the driver Soumen Laskar sustained injuries. Although police is yet to find any clue to the incident, the newly-formed extremist outfit, United Bengali Liberation Front (UBLF), is emerging as the main suspect. [S]

11 soldiers killed in ambush by Manipur ultras

IMPHAL, Feb 8 (PTI): Eleven armymen were killed in an ambush by armed insurgents at Keimai area in Manipur's Tamenglong district today. Official sources said underground activists of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and NSCN (Khaplang) attacked an Army patrol at Keimai, about 190 km west of here, from both sides of the road killing 11 armymen on the spot. NAGAON, Feb 9: Police recovered the body of Kumud Kakoty of Kamalpur and Naba Dadhiya Phukan of Uzan Bazar, Guwahati at Hojai on February 7, a delayed report received here, said. Police sources said that the hired Maruti van (No. AS 01 H2977) used by Kakoty and Phukan and not traced as yet had been taken to Hojai on February 1, and since then they had been absconding. [S]

BOKAJAN, Feb 9: Police recovered bodies of three businessmen from Jelembung hill, 40 km away from Saijan area here on February 4, a delayed report received here said. The three traders have been identified as Nazimuddin (28), Farukh Ahmed (30) and Nasiruddin. [S]

IMPHAL, Feb 9 (UNI): The Army authorities have taken strong exception to the report that 11 armymen were killed in an ambush near Kaimai in Tamenglong district of Manipur yesterday. A senior official of the 57 Mountain Division described the report of killing as ridiculous and unfounded and said the authorities were planning legal action against those responsible for circulating the false and fabricated news to mislead the people. GUWAHATI, Feb 9: The Kamrup district commander of the Rabha National Security Force (RNSF), Ashok Rabha was killed in an encounter with the police at village Kathalkuchi under Boko police station in Kamrup district at 2 p.m. today. Three other RNSF activists, however, managed to escape. [S]

NAGAON, Feb 9: The Nagaon SP, Mr S N Singh today said, the four youths, whose bodies were recovered in the district recently, were kidnapped and killed by the ULFA, because they had spent for personal use Rs 32 lakh of the outfit's money which was in their custody. [S]

JORHAT, Feb 13: Teok police recovered the body of a youth from near Rongkham Tea Estate under Teok police Station today. The body was later identified as that of Numal Gogoi (32) of Rajabari. Gogoi was hacked to death. [S]

IMPHAL, Feb 14: A young bride and the groom's mother were killed and four others seriously wounded when a van, which was part of a marriage party, was caught in the crossfire between insurgents and security personnel in the Imphal East district last night, police reports said. [S]

GUWAHATI, Feb 15: One National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militant and another belonging to the Adivasi Cobra Force were killed in two separate encounters with the Army in lower Assam in the last 24 hours. [AT]

Policeman killed in NDFB blast

GAURIPUR, Feb 16: NDFB militants blew up a truck carrying personnel of the Seventh APBn by using remote control devices at Malandubi under Golokganj police station at about 10 this morning, killing an APBn personnel on the spot, besides injuring two others.

A Correspondent from Golokganj adds: A total of seven police personnel was injured in the blast following which a half-an-hour-long encounter took place between the police and the militants. Later, the militants fled towards the jungle. According to the local people, two or three militants were injured in the shoot-out and they were carried away by their colleagues. [S]

OC among 3 policemen killed ULFA ambush

NALBARI, Feb 17: At least three police personnel including the Officer-in-Charge of the Ghograpar police station in Nalbari district were killed and three others were critically injured in an ambush by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants at Satra (Dalpar) village under Ghograpar police station at around 11 am today. Police, ULFA accuse each other of secret killings

NAGAON, Feb 18: The Nagaon police has accused the ULFA of gruesome killing of four abducted youths whose dead bodies were recovered from different parts of Nagaon district some time back. Sri SN Sing, SP, Nagaon told mediapersons at a media seminar at Army camp recently that he had definite evidence of ULFA's involvement in the macabre's killings. Meanwhile, ULFA has accused the Nagaon police of its involvement in the recent kidnapping and killing of four persons. ULFA denied the organisation's involvement in the murder. [AT]

Woman killed by NDFB

NALBARI, Feb 18: A woman has been shot dead and a teenaged girl injured by suspected NDFB militants in Nalbari district, according to official sources here today. Three National Democratic Front of Bodoland gunmen entered the house of one Makhan Choudhury at Giltejhar village yesterday and shot dead his wife Kalyani Choudhury. The sources said Makhan who was then away was the target of the assailants. They also injured a neighbour of the Choudhurys. The extremists had served an extortion notice on Makhan for payment of Rs 30,000 two weeks ago. [S]

Businessman shot dead

NALBARI, Feb 19: Two persons were killed in two separate incidents under Tamulpur Police Station area in Nalbari district during the last 24 hours. A rice-mill owner Ramesh Deka (33) was shot dead by National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants at his mill premises in Balabari village under Tamulpur police station at 5.30 pm yesterday. It may be mentioned that the slain businessman took initiative in mobilising public opinion against extortion by militants. In another incident a hardcore NDFB militant, Dipak Boro was shot dead by the Army at Polokata village under Tamulpur police station this morning. [AT]

ULFA cadre killed in 'faked' encounter

BIJLIGHAT, Feb 20: An ULFA militant, Golap Talukdar alias Phukan was shot dead by jawans in a 'fake' encounter at Kahikuchi village in Nalbari district yesterday. The same team of jawans also allegedly physically assaulted a youth, who had to be admitted to hospital later. [S]

BONGAIGAON, Feb 24: A driver of a truck (BP-02/1521) was injured seriously when police fired at him after he had refused to stop at the Dhaligaon check gate here this afternoon. The truck also hit a rickshaw in the process. People of the area got enraged at the police constable who had shot the driver and bashed him up. [S]

NLFT kills former leader

AGARTALA, Feb 26: NLFT militant gunned down one of their former leaders, Tarun Debbarma (35) and his mother-in-law Ms Krishnapati Debbarma (65) at his in-laws house at Sarat Chandra Para, 14 Km from Teliamura Police Station in West Tripura district. Tarun Debbarma was a sector in-charge of the NLFT who deserted the group last year and surrendered. [S]

Nagen Sarma, 4 others killed in ULFA blast

NIJ-BAHJANI, Feb 27: State PWD-cum-Forest Minister Nagen Sarma died in a bomb blast here today when suspected ULFA militants triggered off an improvised explosive device (IED) under his vehicle around 1.45 PM. Four others who were travelling with the Minister also died in the explosion. [AT]

GUWAHATI, Feb 27: Four persons, including an Army official and three hardcore militants of banned ULFA, were killed in an encounter at Bagariguri village under Jajori Police Station of Nagaon district late last night. [AT]

4 NSCN (K) ultras, civilians killed in encounter

IMPHAL, Feb 27: One civilian and four activists of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, Khaplang faction (NSCN-K) were killed in separate encounters between Army and the rebels at Longpi village in Tamenglong district of Manipur since Thursday, reports PTI. [AT]

CRPF exchanges fire with insurgents

AGARTALA, Feb 27 (PTI): CRPF personnel exchanged fire with armed insurgents to rescue a kidnapped person in south Tripura district yesterday, police said. There was no casualty in the encounter.
In separate incident, rebels of United Bengali Liberation Force (UBLF) hurled two bombs at a tribal hostel at sub-divisional town Amarpur in south Tripura district yesterday, police said. There was no casualty. [S]

Ten ULFA cadres killed in encounters

GUWAHATI, Feb 28 (UNI): At least eight United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at a place in upper Arunachal Pradesh today. Confirming this, official sources here said that details were awaited.

Our Correspondent from Halem adds: In another incident an ULFA militant was killed in an encounter with the Army near Halem railway station in Sonitpur district at 3 a.m. today. About 500 grams of explosives, two detonators, two metre cordex and some incriminating documents were recovered from the site.

Our Staff Correspondent from Dibrugarh adds: In yet another incident the Army killed an ULFA militant, Dipen Gogoi and arrested another cadre of the outfit, Sankar Moran yesterday at Pengeri in Tinsukia district. [S]

RANGIYA, Feb 28: Jalan Ali (37), a businessman was shot dead by NDFB militants at Ghogapar under Tamulpur police station here today. It may be mentioned that Ali had been served with an extortion notice earlier which he refused to oblige. In another incident, Pinak Majumdar, a businessman hailing from Guwahati was kidnapped by NDFB militants at Dwarkuchi under Rangiya police station yesterday. [S]

JORHAT, Feb 28: Two central committee members of Ulfa were killed and two policemen injured in an encounter last night at Aosangtang basti in Nagaland's Mokokchung district, bordering Jorhat district of Assam, reports our Jorhat correspondent. [TT]

Bodo militants kill four

ITANAGAR, Feb 29 (UNI): Four members of a family were shot dead by suspected Bodo militants at Kokila in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh, official sources said. The militants entered the house of Mr B Gupta, a businessman and shot him dead from close range. They then killed his wife, son and daughter. [S]

5 ultras killed in encounters in city, Nalbari

GUWAHATI, Feb 29: It was a shot in the arm for the counter-insurgency operations in the State today as the City Police killed two ULFA militants of the so-called "volcano unit" at Ambari-Fatashil area in the wee hours while a joint squad of the Army, police and paramilitary forces eliminated three dreaded ULFA militants in an encounter at village Nilpur under Ghograpar police station in Nalbari district, also in the wee hours. Priest killed by miscreants

AGARTALA, Feb 29 (UNI): Tribal guerrillas killed a priest and abducted a youth while a villager was hacked to death by identified miscreants in Tripura last night. Meanwhile, in another incident armed militants kidnapped a youth from Kalyanpur in west Tripura. [S]
