Traditional arts, crafts of Dhubri district
GOLAKGANJ, Jan 1: Dhubri district, situated on the western part of Assam, is famous for traditional crafts by the local artisans distinctly of their own. The jute craft works require only the raw materials jute, which is available in Dhubri district. There are many villages and at least 500 crafts persons practise this art in the district. The main products of the jute crafts are marketing bag, different designs of side bag, gents hand bag, money bag, Sikka, flower vase, carpet, Dolna, magazine holder, doormat, etc. The Dhubri Hasta Shilpa Samabai Samity, leading samity for crafts -- development will try to manufacture jute shoes, chappal room-divider, decorative door screen etc. through the craft development centre. Thousands throng city book fair
GUWAHATI, Jan 2: The 15th Guwahati Book Fair at the Judges' Field here has been drawing 10,000 visitors on anaverage, everyday since its inauguration in the afternoon of December 29 last. AGARTALA, Jan 4: Tripura and Bangladesh governments have decided to organise 'Mukti Yuddha Utsav Agartala-Dhaka' here and in Dhaka to commemorate the 1971 'Mukti Yuddha' (Liberation War) and also strengthen Indo-Bangla friendship. Nagaland has coffee growing potential
KOHIMA, Jan 4: The Coffee Board of India has identified Nagaland as one of the potential coffee growing State, reports UNI. The Board sources said the 'arabica' and 'robusta' varieties of coffee were suitable for growing in high and low altitude areas. They said it would not only help improve the socio-economic condition of the people, but also control jhumming, land erosion and deforestation. About four lakh coffee seedlings were raised last year and distributed to the farmers of the State, the Board said. [AT]
527 patients benefit from medical camp
DIBRUGARH, Jan 5: A day-long free medical check-up camp was held recently at the Moran Gojpuria Public Health Centre, under auspices of the Dibrugarh district committee of Asom Yuva Parishad. The camp was supervised by four doctors: Dr Nabajyoti Hazarika, Dr Kente Himbu, Dr Munin Pathak and Dr Arun Nabum. Dr Hazarika said the camp benefited 527 patients. Moreover, medicines worth Rs 3.72 lakhs were distributed free of cost among the patients. [AT]
Unique documentary on Stilwell Road screened
GUWAHATI, Jan 5: A documentary titled "The Stilwell Road - Revisited" produced by Images Inc; a Delhi-based production house, was screened at the Udeshna cinema hall here this morning. Over two years of research and co-ordination with various agencies in China and Myanmar, as also in India, led to the creation of the documentary. A co-production with the Institute of South Asian Studies of Kunming in Yunnan province in China, the documentary emphasizes the fact that if the Stilwell Road is reopened, the entire economic and industrial scenario of North-east India will be revolutionized since it will open up the vista for vigorous business transactions with China and Myanmar. International infertility meet at Guwahati

In a one-sided quarter-final match held on Friday, Assam outplayed hosts Jammu & Kashmir 6-0 even as Bijab recorded his third individual hat-trick. Assam muga research unit achieves breakthrough

Assam set for IT revolution in health care
GUWAHATI, Jan 7: Healthcare scenario of the north-eastern region is poised for a sea change with the setting up of the medical transcription training centre in the city by the Grace i Net Solution in collaboration with Script on-line, a multinational IT-enabled services company from Bangalore. The State Industry Minister, Mr Gunin Hazarika, who inaugurated the medical transcription centre here today, said that the geographically-isolated people of the North-east, especially that of Assam could now avail the services of doctors, experts etc., from all over the world through medical transcription. The medical transcription production centre at the STPI will start operating from May 1 with an employment of 100 trained transcriptionists. Thousands of applications are pouring into the medical transcription centre seeking transcription training. [S]

Jayashree bags four golds
GUWAHATI, Jan 8 : Assam's under-19 years girls team returned home with the champions title in the National School Games Archery Championship which was held at Calcutta from January 5 to 7. Jayashree Gogoi was the most successful archer with four golds. She won 30m, 40m and individual gold along with the team title. Pallavi Das also performed well in the girls under-14 group with three gold medals. Pallavi struck golds in 40m and 50m along with individual crown. The girl's under-14 team was also adjudged the second best team and won silver. Pankaj Das won a silver in the boy's under-14 group. [AT]

NAGAON, Jan 10: With the crime rate falling considerably the law-and-order situation improved comfortably in Nagaon district in the year 2000 and the activities of militant groups come down to a considerable level, thanks to the Nagaon district police administration. 1 month's pay to ASTC employees released
GUWAHATI, Jan 12: The struggling ASTC employees throughout the State heaved a sigh of relief on the eve of Bhogali Bihu Uruka as the authorities have released one month's salary of the employees as per the recent Gauhati High Court order. Army organizes children's excursion
GUWAHATI, Jan 15: HQ 5 Mountain Division is organizing an excursion for the young children of Arunachal Pradesh to visit Delhi and Agra in the third week of January with a broader aim to foster greater relation, deep understanding and promoting national integration in the minds of the young children, stated a PIB (Defence Wing) release. The excursion is planned for ten days from January 21 to 31. Besides sight seeing, and visiting places of historical importance at Delhi and Agra, the children will also be witnessing "Republic Day Parade' and 'Beating the Retreat' in Delhi. Two Assamese woman filmmakers figure in Limca Book of Records
GUWAHATI, Jan 16: Two Assamese women -- Rita Banerjee and Shibani Choudhury -- are doing commendable jobs as an editor and a scriptwriter-cum-assistant director respectively, in one of the world's most acclaimed natural history filmmakers company -- the Riverbank Studios, headed by the famous filmmaker Mike Pandey. The team has so far produced over 20 films since 1991 on wildlife, environment, social and developmental issues and also on children education. Two of its films -- The Last Migration -- Wild Elephant Capture in Sarguja and the Shores of Silence -- Whale Sharks in India, have won the Green Oscar at the Wildscreen 1994 and 2000 festivals respectively. 173 foreigners intercepted
SHILLONG, Jan 18: The infiltration staff of Meghalaya police have intercepted 173 foreign nationals trying to illegally enter the State through various check gates during the last two weeks. The people were all pushed back, the sources said. The foreign nationals were trying to enter the State from the check gates of Byrnihat, Ratacherra, Gasuapara, Umkiang, Khliehriat, Jamaidwar, Purakhasia and Mohendraganj, the sources added. [AT]

Big boost for State handloom sector
GUWAHATI, Jan 22: Handloom and Sericulture Industry in Assam has received a big boost with the decision of enhancement of sharing more cost by the Centre in view of meeting between the State's Sericulture and Handloom Textile Minister Mr R N Kalita and Union Textile Minister Mr Kashiram Rana in Delhi on January 19, stated an official press release issued from Delhi. In the handloom sector, so long 75 per cent project cost was shared by the Centre and 25 per cent by the State. But henceforth ratio will be 90 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. In the sericulture sector, existing fifty-fifty share has also been modified and now 90 per cent will be borne by the Government of India and 10 per cent by the State. Assam Government's proposal for setting up of one haveli at Guwahati by National Handloom Development Corporation has also been cleared in the meeting. [S]

2 abducted NF Rly employees released
AGARTALA, Jan 29: Two out of the nine North-Eastern Railway employees who were abducted by insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) from Dhalai district earlier this month have been released by the outfit, police said Sunday, reports PTI. Police said the driver of a water tanker of NF Railway Venkatesh Rao and his assistant Tapan Mohanti returned unhurt at Ambasa in the district Saturday. The armed insurgents had intercepted the watertanker at Nailahabari area of Dhalai district and kidnapped them. [AT]

The police administration and the business community of Golaghat heaved a sigh of relief at the surrender of these few dreaded terrorists. This group of ULFA members had created terror and tension amongst the business community since the past several years. Specially the business community of Dhansiri sub-division has been greatly relieved when they came to know about the surrender. The district administration, the police and Minister Mr Binod Goala played a vital role in bringing the militants to the national mainstream, said a local source. Plan to promote silk industry in NE
GUWAHATI, Jan 29: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with Central Silk Board (CSB) has launched a Rs 1654.15 lakh programme under country co-operation framework to support the promotion and development of muga and eri silk industry in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, for three years. Inaugurating a 15-day resource development programme here, Joint Director of CSB and sub-programme coordinator of UNDP, Sri JV Krishna Rao said the non-mulberry silk development programme would focus on participation of rural masses especially women. The programme will also focus on profitable marketing of muga and eri silk products by forming selfhelp groups. [AT]

GUWAHATI, Jan 31: State Bank of India is all set to commission ten more automated teller machines (ATM) in the North-east, including four in Guwahati, SBI NE Circle Chief General Manager J.P. Saikia informed the members of the Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC) for Assam in the city yesterday. SBI has also installed a "helpline" at its local head office in the city to provide information to public. [S]
