Jonai flood scene grim

DHEMAJI, Aug 27: Kabu Chapari near Jonai was threatened to be engulfed by Lali river.

The erosion caused by Lali river had already affected more than 18 villages. More than 2000 flood and erosion affected people are in the relief camp of Sonalipur Lalung village. Heavy erosion continues in that area. Rescue operation and food dropping by helicopters are in full swing. The inmates of the camp alleged that the relief materials supplied to them are not sufficient. The Army rescued about 350 people by helicopter. The devastating flood of Siang river on June 11 last, made more than 2900 people homeless. Now, the continuous erosion of Kabu Chapari threatened many more people to be homeless. Many boatmen complained that they had not yet been fully paid their dues of last flood in June when they were engaged in rescue operation. It is learnt that some volunteer organization like RVC supplied the necessities for the flood victims.

People urged the district administration to make necessary arrangement for the school going children who are in the different relief camps. The newly joined SDO (civil) Jonai shows keen interest in the all round development of Jonai subdivision and seeks the cooperation from the people to help him in all developmental aspects.

The flood affected people had much bitter experience during the administration of out-going SDO (civil). The people of Jonai expect much more from this newly joined young energetic IAS officer.

Our Mangaldai Correspondent adds: After a gap of twenty four days, the disrupted road communication between Tangla and Mangaldai on Mangaldai-Bhitachung road has been resorted with the reconstruction of the collapsed wooden bridge near Bholabari under Kalaigaon police station today. It may be mentioned here that entire northern parts of Darrang district enriched with natural resources, tea gardens and the Brigade head quarter of the Army to Hattigarh remained cut off from the district head quarter as well as with the other parts of the district.

On August 2, the wooden bridge on MB Road near Kalaigaon had collapsed due to the unprecedented devastating flood. As per the initiative taken by Mr Sanjoy Lohia, Deputy Commissioner, Darrang and Mr MM Raichaudhury (MLA) Kalaigaon LAC, the Mangaldai Division of PWD (roads) started the restoration work on war footing inspite of the financial shortage and finally the disrupted road communication has been restored much to the relief of the people. Mention may also be made that Dr Zoii Nath Sarma, Revenue Minister, Assam had visited the area during the flood and assured the people that the bridge would be reconstructed within a short period.
