ABSU, BPAC bracing up for fresh movement

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 9: The All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) and the Bodo People's Action Committee (BPAC) are bracing up for a long and vigorous movement for achieving their long-cherished goal of a separate state of Bodoland. Talking to The Assam Tribune here, the president of the ABSU, Sri Urkhau Gwra Brahma, revealed that they gave a deadline of December 31 to the Central Government to initiate fresh political dialogue on the issue of a separate state but the Centre failed to respond positively. He said that the ABSU and the BPAC have now decided to launch a fresh movement for achieving their goal and the phases of the agitation would be announced soon. He expressed the view that they are mentally prepared for another long agitation as "we are not expecting positive results immediately." [AT]

GUWAHATI, Jan 30 (UNI): Corruption and gross misuse of public funds were some of the primary reasons found responsible for the backwardness of the North-east, and not the Centre's apathy. An opinion poll, conducted by the North-east Girl Students' Coordination Committee, also found that the inability of political leaders from the North-east to properly highlight the problems and convince the Centre for adequate funding was the second most important factor. TINSUKIA, Feb 10: Some youths burned nine packets containing copies of Sadin, a weekly published from Guwahati, in Tinsukia today. The Moran Students' Union has termed the incident as a reaction to the publication of a poem containing derogatory references to the Moran community in the weekly's last edition, and reiterated that unless the weekly issued a written apology, burning of the paper would continue. Expressing surprise at the Axom Xahitya Xabha's silence over the matter, the students' body threatened to boycott the Dibrugarh session of the Xabha. [S]

IMPHAL, Feb 11: Police on Thursday foiled self-immolation bids by four students at different points in Imphal, reports UNI. The students decided to kill themselves demanding release of All Manipur Students Union leaders who are believed to be behind the bars under various sections of criminal laws. [AT]

SHILLONG, April 30: Meghalaya police today shifted the three Khasi Students' Union leaders arrested on Wednesday from Jowai to Khhehriat for "further interrogation". Border Security Force personnel had arrested the student panel's vice-president Gilbert Khongwir, organising secretary Kammon Shallam and assistant publicity secretary Shabor Ranee on charges of having links with the Hynneiwtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). Aizawl tense over rape

SILCHAR, May 25: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl, a student's organisation in Mizoram, will bar movement of non-Mizos in Aizawl for two days from tomorrow to protest against the rape and murder of a Mizo girl. Police said 14-year-old Lalrindiki, daughter of one Abdul Khaleq and Saitingpui, had been missing since May 18. She was killed by one Afzal Hossain, 18, after having been repeatedly raped. Her body, wrapped in a sack, was recovered from the Burrabazar in Aizawl on Sunday morning. Hossain has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. [TT]

ABSU & Adibasi leaders close ranks to avert fresh ethnic unrest

KOKRAJHAR, May 25: The All Bodo Students' Union president, Urkhao Gwra Brahma and Adivasi Seva Samiti president, Badam Harda have expressed serious concern over stray incidents that have been taking place in Kokrajhar for last few days. They have also criticised the role of a section of the press for publishing the misleading news of possibility of eruption of fresh ethnic clashes between the Bodos and the Adivasis. DIBRUGARH, June 1: Over 1,000 students of various schools of Naharkotiya took out a procession in the town today in protest against the atrocities committed by a group of miscreants on May 30 here. The processionists, later assembled at Naharkotiya Higher Secondary School premises and hold a protest rally. Meanwhile, the Naharkotiya police arrested three youths -- Mintu Phukan, Suraj Gohain and Bijoy Koch -- and seized a Maruti car (AS-06A 1400) which they had used during the atrocities. [S]

Students gherao PWD office, engineer flees

BARPETA, June 1: Over 1,000 activists of the Barpeta unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) gheraoed the Barpeta division office of the PWD (Road) in protest against the failure on the part of the department to repair the roads of the district, and to submit a memorandum to the executive engineer. The executive engineer, however, fled from the office after giving the attendance. When the executive engineer did not return even after three hours the agitated students ransacked the office and broke down some windows. [S]

ATTSA's concern over poor condition of tea labourers, demands privatisation

JORHAT, June 9: The tea garden owned by the multinational companies comparatively take better care for the labourers. The general secretary of the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association, Mr Kamakhya Prasad Tacha alleged that though the tea industry has flourished in the State at the cost of the blood and sweat of the labourer, the plantation owners are indifferent to the welfare of these people. He alleged disparities in the welfare measures for the labourers. He lamented that though the local owners of the gardens were supposed to show more concern for the labourers, their attention to the labourers was remarkably poor. [S]

BARPETA, June 12: A mass protest rally under the auspices of the Barpeta district All Assam Students Union (AASU) was held here in protest against the Public Work Department's apathy which has resulted in pathetic road conditions in the district. TINSUKIA, June 20: The publicity secretary of the All Assam Moran Students' Union Dibyajyoti Moran in a press release has alleged that the Oil India limited has been neglecting the demands of AAMSU to reserve 30 per cent of total employment of oil for the candidates of Moran community. A meeting was held on 10th of June last at Borhapjan HE School in which it was decided to declare closure of all the drilling and pumping stations situated at the Moran unless the oil authority takes necessary steps within June 25. Highway blockade from July 8 in Manipur

IMPHAL, July 3: The Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) has called an indefinite highway blockade from July 8 next to press its demands for identification of killers of civilians on June 25 last, a MSF statement said Monday, reports PTI. The statement blamed the State Government for its failure to identify the killers even after nine days and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident. [AT]

GUWAHATI, July 20: Members of the All Kamrup District Students' Union (AKDSU) gheraoed the office of the Director of Panchayat and Rural Development located at Bhangagarh today in protest against alleged ongoing corruption at different levels of the department. ITANAGAR, July 29: The Wancho Students Union and Socialist Syndicate of Tirap district have jointly demanded creation of a separate district for Wancho people of present Tirap district, reports UNI. In a memorandum to the State Governor here on Friday, both the organisations stated that it was a long-felt desire of the entire Wancho population to demand a district, bifurcating the present Tirap district. PATHSALA, July 31: The activists of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), Bajali unit today gheraoed four offices -- PWD, Treasury, Office of the Deputy Inspector of Schools and Office of the Primary Education Officer -- of the subdivision and warned the officers concerned that it would be compelled to take drastic action against the corruption going on unabated in these offices. DIBRUGARH, Sept 2: The All Assam Sonowal - Kachari Students Union (AASKSU), in support of their 23 points charter of demands has started a series of agitational programme from today. As a part of their agitational programme, the AASKSU, Dibrugarh district today observed 'sit-in-strike stir in front of Deputy Commissioner's office. The AASKSU has called for 24 hours upper Assam bandh on September 6 from 5 a.m. in protest against State Government's apathy towards their demands including granting of autonomy to Sonowal - Kachari community under 6th Schedule of Indian Constitution. UDALGURI, Sept 7: The Udalguri Regional Students' Union (an AASU unit) gheraoed the Assam State Electricity Board office here on August 29 last alleging utter failure of the Board in meeting the consumers' problems. More than 300 students under the banner of AASU's Udalguri regional unit went to the ASEB office in front of Udalguri police statio with banners and playcards in the their hands. They shouted slogans against the inaction of the ASEB authority in solving the consumers' grievances. [AT]

120-hr 'oil blockade' from today

GUWAHATI, Sept 10: The proposed 120-hour oil blockade programme of the Dibrugarh District Students' Union from September 11, will affect transportation of crude oil to the five refineries at Digboi, Guwahati, Numaligarh, Bongaigaon and Barauni and gas supply to the Assam State Electricity Board and NEEPCO power plants and the HFCL's fertilizer plants, besides crude oil and gas production of the Oil India Ltd, said an OIL press release here yesterday. Itanagar bandh hits normal life

ITANAGAR, Sept 12: Normal life was hit in the State capital and adjacent areas during the 12-hour "Itanagar bandh" on Tuesday. The bandh called by the All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) from 6.00 am was against the State government's failure to publish the enquiry report on the Rs 1.24 crore Sports scam early this year and for not suspending the officials involved. Sonowal Kacharis' stir threat if 'Gas cracker victims' not rehabilitated

DIBRUGARH, Oct 10: Three associations of the Sonowal Kachari community of the State, the All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students' Union, the Sonowal Kachari Autonomy Demand Committee and the Lepetkatta Regional Krishak Dabi Samiti on Monday stressed that unless adequate resettlement and rehabilitation measures are taken for the proposed evacuees of the gas cracker plant at Lepetkatta near here, they would "have no option but to resort to a democratic agitation". All the three associations reiterated that they are not against the gas cracker plant coming up at Lepetkatta in the district, "but we are definitely against the victimisation of indigenous people in the name of industrialisation," said Milan Sonowal, secretary of the Autonomy Demand Committee. ONGC suspends activities along Assam-Nagaland border

KOHIMA, Nov 3 : The Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) has suspended all its activities along the Nagaland-Assam border following threats from the Naga Students Federation (NSF), reports UNI. An ONGC spokesman said as per the NSF's warning and directive the ONGC had completely winded up its operations along the disputed Nagaland-Assam border near Golaghat district of Assam. [AT]

Dimasas renew statehood stir

SILCHAR, Nov 18: The North Cachar Hills district in south Assam is on the verge of fresh trouble with the All-Dimasa Students' Union (ADSU) and the Dimasa Revival Demand Committee (DRDC) -- the two frontline organisations in the district -- planning largescale stir for a separate "Dimasaraji state". The proposed state is to be carved out of the 4888-sq-km district and its adjoining tribal areas. Students' body to issue 'quit India notice'

GUWAHATI, Nov 23: The Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, Assam, in a press release issued on the eve of Lachit Divas today, said that it would issue a "quit India notice" to Bangladeshi nationals, who had entered the State illegally, in an open meeting at Sonaram High School field in the city at 1 p.m. tomorrow. GUWAHATI, Dec 2: Disappointed by the State government's inaction, members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) yesterday staged a dharna before Assam Tea Corporation (ATC) office Thursday. Hooliganism marks AASU bandh

GUWAHATI, Dec 18: Activists and supporters of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today resorted to hooliganism to enforce their 11-hour Assam bandh in protest against all forms of violence in the State. The unruly AASU activists, besides breaking the glass panes of several Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses, injured an ASTC driver, Deben Chandra Das by pelting stones at him when he was about to drive his bus with full passengers from the Judges' Field here. They did not even spare Don Bosco School and St. Mary's School premises, where admissions were being taken today. [S]

GUWAHATI, Dec 19: A 10-hour Assam bandh called by four students organisations, including three of minority community, ended without evoking any response today, official reports said. [AT]

Karbi bodies' decision for stir

GUWAHATI, Dec 24: A citizens' meeting jointly organized by the Karbi Students Union (KSU), the Autonomous Demand Movement Committee (ADMC), the Karbi Arlos Assam (KAA) and the Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) at Gopal Boro Government Higher Secondary School here today resolved to launch a democratic movement in protest against the alleged conspiracy hatched by the State Government to evict the tribal people of Assam especially the Karbis from their own land. The meeting lambasted the State Government's attempt to evict the tribal people on the excuse of setting up some industries or other projects at their land. [S]

One abducted

GOLOKGANJ, Dec 24: One Amjad Ali Ahmed of Saraldongagaon under Gauripur police station was kidnapped by a five-member armed gang of militants at around 9.30 last night from his residence. [S]

DIBRUGARH, Dec 25: The next conference of All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students' Union will be held on January 20-21 next year at Digboi. The conference is scheduled to deliberate at length on the union's demand for an autonomous region for the Sonowal Kachari community. [AT]

Special exemptions in ADSU bandh

DIBRUGARH, Dec 27: The All Dibrugarh Students' Union (ADSU) exempted the movement of people for attending the adyashraddha of Syed Abdul Malik, all examinations, the survey work for the gas cracker project at Tengakhat and all essential services from the purview of the December 29 Dibrugarh district bandh it had called in protest against the killings in the district and attack on AASU activists.
