12-hour Kokrajhar bandh on Jan 12

GUWAHATI, Jan 10: The Kokrajhar District unit of the Ex-Servicemen Association has given a call for a 12-hour Kokrajhar District bandh from 6 am of January 12 in protest against the killing of an ex-serviceman Capt Bishnu Prasad Roy in Diajijari village by unidentified miscreants. The association, in a release, said that the incident took place at 7.15 pm on January 7 when Capt Roy was in a meeting with villagers. The miscreants called him out of the meeting and shot him dead from a short range. Capt Roy joined the Indian Army in 1963 and retired in '91. [AT]

SILCHAR, Jan 12: Barak Upatyaka Sangrami Aikya Mancha, a common platform of various organisations, had called a down-to-dusk Barak bandh on January 22 in protest against the administrative failure in checking the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the valley. [AT]

NAGAON, Feb 11: The 12-hour Nagaon bandh called by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today affected normal life in the township. Shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicular traffic was thin. The bandh, which was peaceful, was called by the AJYCP to protest against the killing of four youths by the ULFA. Nagaon Superintendent of Police SN Singh had confirmed that the ULFA was behind the killing of four youths, including a businessman who was a former militant. -- PTI [AT]

Tripura ethnic riot toll 43, bandh today

AGARTALA, May 22: The death toll in the past three days of ethnic violence in the Kalyanpur police station area in Khowai sub-division has risen to 43 with the recovery of two more bodies from the worst-affected Bagber village. They are yet to be identified.
Another person, identified as Rabi Roy, died of his injuries in Teliamura hospital after being shot during a rebel attack on Chakmaghat market under Teliamura police station last evening.
Sources from Amarpur subdivision said the body of Tripura State Rifles jawan Rabilal Das, who had been kidnapped from his residence in the Malbasa area of Amarpur on Friday, was recovered from a jungle near Malbasa.
The Congress, Trinamul and the ruling Left Front have called 12-hour state bandh tomorrow to protest the ethnic violence in Khowai over the past three days. The Congress has extended its bandh call by another 12 hours. [TT]

NALBARI, Aug 22: Traders in Nalbari town have called a 72-hour trade bandh in the town from this morning in protest against the police brutality on a jeweller, Mr Dipak Jain, proprietor of Madhushree Jewellers, for having refused to hand over gold ornaments worth Rs 13,570 to the wife of the Nalbari Additional SP (Sador), for just Rs 6,000. Of Five-day Weekends

This time the organizers of bandhs in Assam excelled even themselves. Not content with providing the people a three-day weekend by prefixing a bandh to a second or fourth Saturday, they managed a neat exercise of prefixing and suffixing the bandhs to Independence Day which luckily happened to fall on a Tuesday following a longer weekend. They did not have to rely on the well-worn Friday before a second Saturday. All that was needed was for different organizers of bandhs to come to an arrangement whereby the days of worklessness had to be neatly placed to fill the required slots to achieve a five-day weekend. PDF-sponsored bandh peaceful

KOKRAJHAR, Aug 24: The 11-hour Assam bandh called by the Ramchiary faction of the PDF from 5 a.m. today in protest against the killing of PDF MLA Mohini Basumatary passed of peacefully. The PDF-called bandh was supported by the ABSU and the BPAC.
Meanwhile, the Adivasi Students Association of Assam-called 36-hour Assam bandh, which began from 5 a.m. today, was also peaceful during the first 12 hours.

The organisation observes October 15 every year as "National Black Day". The MPLF, an umbrella body of three major militant outfits, has called the bandh from Saturday midnight till 5 pm on Sunday. AGARTALA, Oct 15: A dawn-to-dusk bandh today crippled life in North Tripura's Kalashahar subdivision, reports UNI. The 12-hour bandh was sponsored by the Opposition Congress party to protest yesterday's gunning down of a police official by the underground National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants at Golakpur tea estate. IMPHAL, Oct 20: Over and above the deteriorating law-and-order situation prevailing in Manipur, the people of this tiny State are going to be burdened with two separately called statewide bandhs in the next three days. The first 13-hour statewide bandh beginning tomorrow morning, has been called by the Joint Action Committee on Laishram Gunindro abduction issue in protest against the gruesome murder of driver Gunindro. The bandh will be in effect from 5 am to 6 pm tomorrow. It may noted here that Van driver Laishram Gunindro of Keishampat in Imphal was abducted by some unidentified persons on September 2 last and his dead body was recovered only on October 18 evening after digging out from Langol hill which is about 4 km north-west of Imphal town.

A Correspondent from Duliajan adds: An uneasy calm prevails at Naoholia here where as many as four persons had been shot dead by armed miscreants on October 22. The bodies of the four victims were consigned to flame after a largely-attended funeral procession by the people of the area yesterday. Though the police sources said that the killing was the handiwork of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) the banned outfit denied that they had any hand in the Naoholia killing. [S]

Four other injured of the last evening's tragedy have been released from the Chapakhowa Civil Hospital at Sadiya this morning. Till now, 28 persons have been confirmed dead in the incident. [AT]

DIBRUGARH, Dec 10: The death toll of Kukurmara incident rose to 29 following the death of another injured person, Mr Ramesh Shah (28), at the Assam Medical College this afternoon. Mr Shah had been admitted to the Assam Medical College in the evening of December 8 with multiple injuries in the abdomen and lower abdominal region. The other injured persons, who are undergoing treatment at the AMC, are stated to be out of danger.
Meanwhile, the first 12 hours of the 36-hour upper Assam bandh called today by the Sachetan Nagarik Manch, which claimed to have the support of 21 other organizations, passed off peacefully. The bandh affected normal life in the district. [S]

115 holidays in 2001

GUWAHATI Dec 11: In spite of the State Government's assurances about encouraging work-culture among its employees, all the government offices will remain closed for 115 days in 2001. In other words, the employees will have to attend their offices for 250 days excluding the Assam bandh calls of different organizations and other kinds of agitational programmes which will affect the normal functionings of the State Government offices, in the next year. There is no doubt whatsoever that today's 11-hour Assam bandh called by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) will turn out to be a great success for the simple reason that the organizer's credentials are right with the people. It is, after all, the AASU giving a bandh call, and people know that the administration and the police will just look the other way whenever there is any conflict between the organizers and sections of the public that do not want a bandh to rob them of their livelihood. KAMALABARI, Dec 23: Normal life was paralysed in Majuli Subdivision on Thursday by the 12th hour Majuli Bandh called by the Majuli District Youth Congress (I) in protest against initiation of the construction work of the boulder-spar to protect the Hatishal Neamati area from the erosion of the Brahmaputra without taking adequate steps simultaneously to protect Majuli from erosion by means of a parallel boulder spar on the north bank. Mixed response to bandh in Changlang, Tirap

ITANAGAR, Dec 24: Fed up with decades of kidnappings, killings and extortions by the two factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, residents of Changlang district and Deomali in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday observed a dawn-to-dusk bandh to send a clear message to the insurgents that people in general do not approve of any form of violence and want peace, official sources said. Posters with slogans like 'We are against kidnapping of our innocent people', 'Do not make our peaceful districts a battleground for insurgents', 'We do not approve any form of violence', etc, were pasted around the whole Changlang district, the sources said, adding, the bandh was called by the Tirap and Changlang People's Forum. DIBRUGARH, Dec 27: The All Dibrugarh Students' Union (ADSU) exempted the movement of people for attending the adyashraddha of Syed Abdul Malik, all examinations, the survey work for the gas cracker project at Tengakhat and all essential services from the purview of the December 29 Dibrugarh district bandh it had called in protest against the killings in the district and attack on AASU activists. IMPHAL, Dec 29: As a part of its statewide agitation demanding the removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from Manipur, a two-day bandh has been called on December 31 and January1 next in the State. The bandh was called by the Amuba Aain Louthoknaba Taksinbada Tengbang Ba Imasingi Nupisingi Apunba Lup, a congregation of Meira Paibi organisations expressing support to the hunger strikers Irom Sharmila, Pakpi and Memcha, who are demanding immediate removal of black laws from Manipur. IMPHAL, Dec 30: A two-day Manipur bandh has been called by various women organisations in protest against the infamous Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in the state. The recently-formed "Women's Front against Black Laws" has called the 48-hour bandh on December 31, 2000 and January 1, 2001. The women organisations (Meira Peibi) were agitated over the state and Union government's apathy towards the fast-unto-death by three Manipuri women. The three -- Irom Sharmila, Hidangmayum Pakpi and Yumnam Memcha -- had launched the strike demanding the withdrawal of Act following the killing of 10 innocent civilians by the Assam Rifles on November 2. IMPHAL, Dec 31: The 48-hour bandh, which started from the midnight of Saturday, disturbed normal life in the State today. The bandh will continue till midnight of January 1. The Amuba Aian Louthoknaba Hotnanabada Tengbangba Imashingi/Nupishingi Apunba Lup, a joint organisation of the Meira Paibis called the 48-hour bandh in protest against the government's failure to look into the fast-unto-death agitation by three hunger strikers -- Irom Sharmila, Pakpi and Memcha. The three hunger strikers are demanding immediate withdrawal of black laws from the State. [AT]
